My new pawn/gunshop find today. A 1917 S&W DA 45. Has all matching numbers accept the barrel, proof marks visable. Not sure of the age, never owned one before and I wanted a 45acp/AR DA revolver but can't afford the GB priced 25-2 or 625 3 or 4" that I wanted. plus these just have that cool nostalgic thing going for them. I have no half moon or moon clips yet but I have 2 vintage boxes of factory Rem AR's to try tomorrow. Now for some acp & ar load data research.

Keep the loads in the middle of the ACP window for reloading and it should last you for as long as you care to shoot. Nice find!

I have one similar... but, with not quite as nice blueing... many years ago, I bought a 5 gallon bucket of unfired R-P 45 Auto Rim cases, for scrap price... I wet tumbled them & resold most but it forced me to buy something that shoots the cartridge... my buddy also donated a couple handfuls of half moon clips... which I've never found the need for, since I have plenty of AR cases... & it's still my only 45 ACP revolver

The more I check this gun out, the more I like it. Rich in history, I ordered some full & half moon clips w/tool off EBay. plus a collectors book on S&W 1917, colt 1917, and other military handguns of their period. I will be able to research all proof marks and different model features more. Plus I dug out my handloader mag with the article on using 1917 and +P 45 AR loads and another article all on 45acp hand loads.

I use a 215 grain lead SWC sized to .452 in Auto Rim cases that shoots rather nicely and to point of aim. Bought the bullets at an estate sale and unsure of the origin of the mold.

I have a lot of .452 bullets from 200gr-310gr. I believe the only .451 are 200 XTP's. But there is not rule, you can use either size in ACP or AR.
