Sorry I haven't been around much recently! The upcoming season of SHOOTING GALLERY is heavy on precision rifles, Scout rifles, and pistol caliber carbines. With it almost in the bag -- 2 more episodes to film this year -- I'm getting back to single actions.
I got one of the Cimarron "Bad Boy" .44 Magnums for T&E...Army style frame, flat top with adjustable sights, 8-inch octagonal barrel and a really great blued finish...I plan to do a full report on it for SGO (short for SHOOTING GALLERY ONLINE...clever, huh?), which is unfortunately behind Outdoor Channel's paywall at MyOutdoorTV.com. I haven't really wrung it out yet, but I have a thing for Army frames and octagonal barrels. I ran a box of 240-gr JHPS through it on 15 and 25 yard steel, and I thought it handled just great, that big barrel soaking up the recoil. Short story...I told Cimarron I'd buy it. I see it as fitting in a "traditional" .44 Magnum niche, stopping at the 240-gr level...I've got the Rugers for dinosaur killers! Besides, it's just pretty.
I sent back the .45 Colt/.45 ACP Redhawk...shot just spiffy, but I decided to stay in .44 Magnum, .454 Casull and 45/70 for the big bore handgun needs. Love the 45/70 BFR! With the cowboy lead it's an accurate powderpuff and surprisingly gentle with the Hornady Leverevolutions...I have dropped any of Ashley Emerson's bombs in it yet.
Finally -- and Mr. Tiffin sorta warned me about this year's back -- I got to my orthopedist, and he's puzzled. He said I have classic "use" arthritis in the knuckle and finger joint of my right index finger. "How on earth," he asked, "does someone manage to overuse their right index finger?" Let me explain, I say...
