I am usually the guy that is there 10 minutes too late. Today was opening day for the general deer and elk season. I am alreadyback home with a cow in the back of my truck. And that includes the time it took me to quarter it up and carry it out.

Congrats
Of course opening morning success means you donβt really get hunt much that year, some years that alright though when time is short. Of course some years you get blessed by the elk gods and your chance comes at last light on your last day to hunt. I never pass opening day animals when the chance is presented, too many years I have worked hard for many days to get one chance. Take the blessing whenever you get the chance.

Elk are never easy, you can have them all around you one day & they are in the next zip code the second day, take them when you can or kick horse turds the rest of the season! This has been a really slow elk season for everyone so far, even the local guys that never fail are grumbling about how tough the hunting has been. The elk are hanging up in the heavy timber, going nocturnal, the leaves are still on the trees in many places & still not much snow. All that means the hunting is tough! My family totally struck out during archery season, that's never happened until this year, I gave it up a few years back, too many so called hunters bugling every 30 seconds. I miss the old days. So far none of us have killed an elk but the boys are out there today on the horses & I'll go soon. Good job on your cow F3, you'll have good chewing all winter, just keep the stove full of wood & the snow plowed! Now we need pictures, what gun, bullet, distance, how did you break her down, Wyoming saw maybe? Again nice job buddy!

I was shooting my Savage 110 I have had since I was 13. A few months ago I rebarrelled it to 280 Ackley. I had intended on using Sierras 160 Gameking hollowpoint but the Nosler brass I bought was chambering hard. So I stuck with the 150 gr factory blem bullets I had bought from Midway and were loaded in Federal brass I had fireformed. It sure did the trick though.Someone spooked them my way and they were at a good trot. I had the legs extended on my bipod because of the tall grass and the travelling directly left to right at about a hundred yards. I had to shift position several times to keep up with the lead cow. The first shot was poor, I failed to maintain my lead and caught her too far back. But it caused her to turn perfectly broadside in the opposite direction. The second shot was behind the shoulder she stumbled and went down. I waited abit to see if she was going to get back up then slowly headed toward her. When I got there she was still kicking around so I slung my rifle and drew my S&W M69 loaded with Rimrocks Keith bullet and put one in her neck. Then began the work. I used a knives of Alaska hatchet(abit light for elk) a Silky Ibuki handsaw(not meant for cutting bone but is the best singlehand woodsaw in existence in my opinion).I was maybe a half mile from my truck but my hamstrings are pretty dang sore and so were my forearms. Being by myself sure wore me out. My wife bought me a nice camera for my last birthday and I still think I am taking pictures when I am not.

Congrats on a successful hunt. My very first elk was on public land, non-guided, very late season, and the odds were well against bagging one. But,, I got lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time,,,and a legal raghorn presented himself to me. Guess what,,, I didn't hesitate a bit. It's nowhere near as big as most bull elk we see,,, but he was all mine, my way. So what if you got it early on opening day,,, ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!! KUDOS!

I am second inline on the hunt roster for one of the Bighole units in Montana. I might have to buy another freezer!
