I just got one from Dixie in 44-40. This model is $450 and I’m really astonished that it is. In terms of general fit and finish… yeah, there are some things here that are not hand fitted and maybe even not examined for QC, but still I don’t know I’m missing out on $1000 more of craftsmanship by not having a Colt. These are great guns. General fit and finish: Absurdly precise action BS and TG fit to the frame passes the fingernail test I can see some polishing wheel swooshes if I look very hard, but I could discern these on my last USFA. There is a burr on the rear sight. I think this is a MIM part with maybe the notch machined, I’ll get that off with a file. CS Mark, 2017 date code, but it’s a J serial frame, and this range was around 13-14 years ago. I wonder if at that time they didn’t just render out 500-1000 frames for these for when they needed. CCH is attractive, and dark at most angles, but I think kind of a low effort job at the factory. Mixed feelings on it but I'm not changing it. Haven't shot it. Things I did: Stiff action, pretty stiff. I put in a Wolf sear and bolt spring and narrowed the mainspring. I took the trigger sear down say 1/64, I wanted a little, just a little, hammer overtravel going to full cock. There was none. I Dremel drummed the cam leg tine with the small drum, fine grit. Had a bit of resistance going over the cam, what they call the 'Uberti hump'. I was shocked to find a set of Gen 1 Sambars would go on (showing some edge on the butt, but just barely). Here they stay. Cobalt 1/8 drill bit for the alignment pin goes through the TG like butter (on a drill press). Not a value judgment there, just is curious to me because I don’t know all the ins and outs of steel. I’ve burnt up oxide bits trying to do the same on Rugers (that was a learning experience...).

I couldn't agree more. I opted for the 45 Colt version from Dixie. Think it was $515, but no love loss between me and the 44-40.
I lucked out and got a perfect specimen Colt NF 44 Special. However, well over 2x the ccost of the Uberti and certainly no better. Fact is, probably not as good.

I've been on the verge of pulling the trigger on one of these for over a year.
Is the front sight blade removable?

Wow! That is indeed a handsome revolver. I've got a short barreled .45 that I've had awhile but haven't' done too much with it. Some body had a Ruger Blackhawk made up like one of those a few years back, and I've given some thought to adding a Ruger front sight to my Uberti. Just mulling over so far. Bob Wright

Just don't see too many of the short barreled Uberti Flattop's. Although I'm partial to 7.5" barrels, if Dixie offered the shorter barreled guns I'd be willing to bet they'd sell quite well... I know I'd buy one!

Like aeroscout, I've been looking hard at those Uberti Flattops for a long while. I wish they would offer it in 38-40 as well. I've been equally tempted by their Bisley 38-40, though it's not a Flattop.

A good looking single action is a beautiful thing and brings a smile to my face. Congratulations.
