Nothing better than taking a girl hunting!
Well...since I don't have kids....
Took a ride down to Ft. Sumner to hunt the ranch I've been lucky enough to hunt for the past 10 years.
For a while they only got one antelope tag but recently they have been getting two which works out just fine.
She shot hers at about 200 yds. after spotting him laying down about a half mile off. We went after him and he presented a nice broadside shot for her so she decided to take it. She's so much more about getting a clean kill and could really care less about the horn size.....She's shooting a .30-06 loaded up with 125gn accubonds at about 3400fps...deadly.
I waited until the second day after seeing some really nice bucks the first and not being able to get a good shot at one. Turned out this felt like a bad idea as most of the antelope we had seen on Saturday were just plain gone... We had been seeing 6 large groups of 10 or better with 2 groups of 20 or more. 2nd day just a few trios and some single bucks. I waited until late afternoon and decided that one buck we had named the "skyline buck" because he was holding tight on a ridgeline was going to have to do. We had seen him several times and I had decided he was too small.
He was dozing in the sun, I got within 178 yds and he stood up. I said to my pal..."he's damned scrawny isn't he?" It was time so I put a 110 Barnes TTSX from my .270 at 3470 through his heart. Unlike the usual antelope shrinkage, as we drove up to get him he grew! That darned antelope had a huge body and a giant head. I think his head was so big it had made his body appear small! His horns were heavy and tall. Same deal...his darned head made him look almost like a "dink".
I'm really happy with him and she's happy with hers too. Got each one in the cooler within an hour of pulling the trigger so we've got some good eating ahead. Actually, I'm afraid he's going to be a tough old goat so lots of good hot green chile antelope stew with chicos this Winter.
She has one of 15 bull tags in one of the finest areas in NM starting next Saturday. We're looking for a nice bull and most importantly a good shot. We went back where I posted the bugling video previously this AM and we saw 9 bulls...4 shooters.
I'm truly blessed in so many ways....
