My buddy called & wanted to do some shooting yesterday... a challenge... his new GP-100 Match champion, against my 25 year old stainless 4" GP-100... in the end, the older GP-100 won out... comments between us... the Rubber Pachmeier grips & the full underlug barrel, & the well worn in trigger were the deciding factors... as well as about equal accuracy... he has polished the trigger contact surfaces lightly, otherwise is bone stock, had 50-100 rounds fired through it so far... mine only has the rubber grip added , & has a red fiber optic front sight, ( as does the Match, from the factory ) & several 1000 rounds through it over all the years... guessing overall quality was probably slightly better back when mine was made, & shooting 357 mag level ammo ( instead of low pressure 38 special level loads ) the full underlug seemed to rise under recoil noticeably less & after 100 rounds through each, even though the the Pachmier grip was narrower in the back strap, it was still more comfortable to shoot... we did like the grip angle better on the "Match"... it seemed to keep your hand in the proper shooting position better than the angle on the rubber grips... now I really need to think this over, as this was the gun I was going to send in for a 10 mm conversion... if it's better than a new match... I might be better off buying a new GP-100 for the 10 mm conversion

I have a MC that just flat out shoots quite well. I'd shot Gp's off & on over the years but never bought one. The MC wood grip just fits my hands so well,,, that I got a second pair from Ruger, and bought a second GP in 6". My thoughts would be to find another GP & send it out for the conversion.

CONTENDER... that is an interesting thought... putting the MC grips on my old GP-100... wondering if the added weight of the underlug, & the lack of slab sided barrel, would take some of the "bite" out of the wood grips with hotter loads???

Had a MC and it was a great gun. Did not like the big fiber optic front sight as it hampered precise holds on target. MC built for "revolver games" not for bullseye work. I will pick up another one if someone makes a plain black blade for the front.
Fun gun to shoot fast and play "combat" with.

do all the GP-100's come with fiber optic now??? my older one was a plain black blade ( not the single action square style... but no fiber optic ) I'm sure there are non fiber optic sights available... if not... I better find & covet my original

Interesting thread! I really love the early GeePees (& EsPees) but I'm always on the hunt for a good deal on an MC. My 3rd year GP100 has a great trigger and is well-made. All it needs is a younger (newer) little brother! -Bill Gotta' Have Pictures!

The MC wood grip just fits my hands so well,,, that I got a second pair from Ruger... Isn't the MC grip just a Hogue grip with stippling instead of checkering, made for Ruger by Hogue? Is there a price difference?

I'm not sure,, as I haven't tried the Hogues. I just know the palm swell & all fits my hands quite well. The stippling doesn't hurt either.

I looked into it, as I've been wanting wood for my new GP. I believe the MC's are Hogue and identical. Haven't been able to handle any myself and shopping in the blind is... Anyway, I just sprung for a set of these to try out. Hopeful. I guess if they aren't a good fit, I'll either try the Hogue or make some myself.

Ya' know...you are trying to decide which of 2 favorite guns to have customized...
I am sitting wishing that I could just like any GP100.
I have handled them, read a lot about them and shot a pretty good assortment of them...I just cannot come up with anything that I really like about them....not that I strongly dislike...there is just nothing there that appeals to me as much as the 686. I guess that is the beauty of firearms, in general, we get to pick what we like.
Matter of fact, there are only 2 Ruger double actions that I care for...the Redhawk (not Super Redhawk) and the LCR. And, to be honest, I have bought 5 new Ruger single actions in the last 3yrs...3 of those had to be returned for repair...so, I doubt that I will buy another new Ruger single action.
With all of the above said, I have more Ruger guns than any other brand.
At any rate, good luck with your conversion.

According to what I've read from reputable authors, the Hogues on the MC are made specifically for the MC & are not available for purchase from Hogue. But, are available from Ruger. Too much meat for me on the top rear. I bought an original set of wood insert rubbers & used them for a while, much thinner at the top. Still liking the feel of the Hogues at the bottom, I took about a quarter inch off the top rear. It helped, but I still don't get the finger placement I want for double action work. Back to the grinder.
