While I am elated that Ruger finally saw fit to build us a 5 shot big bore I am somehow unsatisfied with it's "looks". It isn't the 6 1/2" barrel, I have several sixguns in that configuration and find them just fine. I just don't think the extra long ERH "fits" my idea of what it should look like. Just look up at Lee Martin's hand cannon on the banner. It does not have the longer ERH and the overall proportion of Lee's sixgun is mostly definitely spot on. I have an OM 41 Magnum 6 1/2" tackdriver that was a gift from my hide Doctor that I am going to go thru and spiff up as well as convert to Bisley configuration and it will stay a 6 1/2" sixgun with a standard ERH.
Now, don't get me wrong. I happen to have a matched pair of sixguns by Clements with long ERH's and they are drop dead gorgeous BUT, they are octagonal barrels with barrels that go past the ERH the same distance as the 5 1/2" sixguns. I realize I am splitting hairs here, but then again I have been at this sixgun thing for some time and lean toward the particular.
I didn't have this problem with my .454 Ruger Bisley because right away I decided to install a custom 10" barrel on that one along with a SSK mount and a scope. But what to do with the 480?
I really like the 7 1/2" length for a hunting sixgun. A straight taper 7 1/2" or even an odd length like a 8 3/8's would be work for me.
I have always liked the 5 1/2" barrel band guns. The Linebaughs and Bowen styles are definite classics.
There is the octagon option. This one could be combined with a flat-topped frame and dovetail rear....
Then there is the find a stainless full size frame Bisley Vaquero in stainless. Do a bit a parts swapping and end up with a Dustin Linebaugh style 4 5/8"s gun....
What do you think?

Some guys would grip if they were hung with a new rope! Just teasing Chief. The good thing is you have the skill set and talent to make it into just what you what while the rest of us send them out. I have to admit, I have never even looked at a picture of the Ruger 454 or 480 5 shot guns simply because they don't fill a need or want in my safe. I am glad Ruger came out with them so more folks could enjoy the big bore sport but I have just become so enamored with the custom revolver bug ( thanks in no small part to you yourself!) that a new manufactured Ruger gun has no interest for me. If I did buy one, I know it would be sent off right away to get tweaked in some form or fashion.

I guess I look at them as a tool first and foremost. Personally I would MUCH prefer having the long ejector rod with the barrel bobed so it was similar in appearance to a 4 5/8" Ruger. That way I would get the best of both worlds. Faster reloading , no extra barrel length for ease of everyday packing. The extra bobble of having to flick brass out of its chamber is worse than inconvenient.

Very few of us look at a six gun the way Fermin does. When he zeroes in on a revolver, whether it's custom or factory stock, he's analyzing it from muzzle to grip screws & he has an eye for the very best. Whether it's a front sight, an ejector rod, a Bisley hammer, the stocks, trigger angle, trigger pull, etc. Everything about a six gun has to be perfect if it's his, either that or he makes it perfect, there's no second place guns in his safe, not for long.
Fermin does amazing work with files, sanders, grinders, mills, lathes, etc. He can do it all, the one thing he doesn't have is all the equipment to do it, that's the only reason any of his stuff get's trusted to anyone else! His talents are on par with all of the good guys but he chose a different career, keeping the fine people of South Texas safe, & make no mistake, he is a snake with a six gun!
I like my Ruger 480 the way it is, except I wish it had a barrel band, that would make me very happy!

5.5 inch barrels are my favorite, so I'd go with a 5.5" banded.......

When shooting both lengths here, I really appreciate the positive way the brass flies outta the 6.5" version with the max length ejector. You'll likely not have any trouble selling or trading a long one off.

I love the shorties.... trying hard not to sell my 6.5" 480 SBH AND buy the 4-5/8" model.

Got a matching Sixshot front sight in the que now ! Am debating getting a couple of Belt Mtn base pins like most of my other SA's have. No Ransom rest or decent bench set up here, so never was really sure of results from the upgrades. Wonder..

If the long ejector rod set up is available, I would Love to have one on my 45 Bisley Convertible Stainless 5 1/2" . I do know that I had a very hard time putting my friends 6 1/2" 480 down when he showed it to me the first time.
I'm focusing my thots on bobbing the barrel on my SRH 480 to 5 3/8s" Can't figure out why Ruger doesn't just come out with the Toklat in 480. . The ONLY thing I don't like about the 480 is the price of brass compared to 45 Colt.

I had the 480 Ruger just long enough to be convinced to build a 4 5/8" Bisquero patterned after the Dustin Linebaugh guns I found pictures of.
If you need a donor gun, I have an extra stainless large frame bisquero I had gotten when I was looking for one to send Mr. Harton. I would be more than happy to send it to you for a good price after the help you've given me.
