Does anyone have a SRH with the screw on front sight like these ? shopruger.com/Super-Redhawk-Red-Ramp-Front-Sight/productinfo/90422/ The one on my older , green 480 7 1/2" is sweated on . at least I think it is. I'm strongly thinking about shortening the barrel to 5 1/2" but , I don't want to destroy the finish by having the sight base silver soldered back on . ?? Any insights will be much appreciated. Glen.

the Alaskans are machined to take the GP-100 front sights, so they are easily changeable is the round portion of the barrel on a standard SRH too small to machine like that???

As it doesn't have a solid rib like the GP100 does . I don't believe there is enough meat there. I think that is why they have a front sight base. I'm hoping for an inexpensive fix for the long barrel. It looks like I can get 5 3/8" if I have it cut off behind the front sight base.

Glen. ***** I don’t picture what you’re trying to do. As an example of drilling & tapping a round barrel for a ramp sight, I had Mike Brazda of Bayou Teche Guns in Louisiana shorten the barrel of a Ruger KS411N “Silver Hornpipe” (stainless 10-1/2" SBH silhouette model). Then D&T for a Super Redhawk sight base, which itself had to be drilled and countersunk. The SRH sight base was glued to the barrel with Loctite 380 and screwed in place. Loctite 380 is so strong, the screw may be unnecessary. However, I am not in the habit of trusting glue for those jobs. The Loctite certainly takes a great strain off the screw. Which is why some use it to help hold an ejector housing in on the barrel. The Silver Hornpipe has what Ruger calls a Bull barrel----untapered. Therefore, the hole for an ejector housing may be tapped one or two threads deeper than the standard Super Blackhawk tapered barrel. The untapered----Bull----barrel started with the prototype SRM .357 Maximums in 1981, and was adopted to the first stainless Super Blackhawk in 1983, which of course is the KS411N with 10-1/2-inch barrel with blued steel target front sight (screwed on ala Single Six and .22 Auto Pistol Target models). I was wondering if anyone had done the shortening of a SRH barrel and what they used for a front sight. As it is atm my shots with heavier than factory 325 gr boolits are landing quite a bit high even with the sight bottomed out. I need a taller front sight. But I also want to shorten the barrel. So I was thinking of using one of the aftermarket Ruger SRH front sights.
