Always in a search for full case and high velocity I tend to hang out with fast rifle , slow pistol powders. My current test sled is a Buckeye but I also enjoy single 7 happiness. Of course a new Henry rifle is involved. So I have been looking at going a step slower than the h110/ 4227 benchmarks and was looking at A5744 and A1680 . Is this getting down to the point of diminishing returns. I'm betting this has been looked into before and wondering if it's a waste of time. Also a brief experiment/failure indicated standard primers not being enough. Need suggestions whether magnum or small rifle primers are the way to go.

For that Henry rifle, I'd wager Lil Gun to be a top performer. It's been nearly magical in longer barrels.
I avoid it in revolvers, but in TCs and rifles, it's my easy choice.

I believe there is load data out there for 5744 and 1680 for the 32-20. Maybe in the HV section of the AA manual. I played with it some in the TC platform with heavy bullets. I found both to be a bit to slow to my liking. AA#9 is my go to powder in the 32-20 most of the time. I have shot a fair bit of lilgun with heavy bullets in my buckeye with no issues, YMMV.
I have not run the 327 through the ringer enough to comment much. Longshot has shown me a goodly amount of speed and accuracy for what I would call upper midrange loads. Jeff

For my top end 32-20/327 loads I use CCI 550 primers.

Thanks for the thought about it. I was hoping some one had burned some A-1680 in a 32-20 and could give a thumb up or down. Can't shake the feeling so I'll probably get a pound and give it a try . Maybe not MAX velocity but I should get a 100% case density or close. Thanks, for the heads up on mag primers for all slow powders.

FWIW, I run a lot of SR primers, CCI or Winchester, in my .32-20 heavy loads. Never had a problem with ignition in my 'Buckeye'.

Yup , that's what I was slipping into also and I just got to pull about 40 of them as a reward. I think if you are using ball or spherical powder you may get away with it . I pushed too far into slow ,rod type powder and got squibs,,, lots of squibs.

I would have to go back and check my notes but as I recall I did try 680, the forerunner to 1680 and ran out of case capacity before I could get better velocity than I was getting from H110 in the 32-20 with heavy bullets.

USED A LOT OF 680 WAY BACK BEFORE H110. ABOUT 100-150 FPS SLOWER THAN H110/WW296 WITH 300 GR. .44 MAG BULLETS.

Again, I am going off my memory here, but I want to say I also went a step even slower than 680 and also tried 4198 and again, not enough case capacity for any gains over H110 in the 32-20. Now, in the bigger cased 32's like Reeders 321 GNR and even his 300 GNR these might have some promise but not having such I cant speak to that.

Will of course start a little lighter and work up. Understand it's a little below the peak possible with 110/296 but still plenty snappy for a cast general purpose round. Sounds like a fun work up and I do love a nice full case. As always , thanks to all.
