LGS has this, I am not able to see it live until Monday. Is this model familiar to anyone? Said to be 308. Looks like a BDL. HS Precision stock you think? D.

bolt isn't right for a 600. my guess is a model 7 or 700.

Of course, 7 or 700. Stock looks like Bell and Carlson and may be aftermarket.

700. Stock may be Custom Shop or aftermarket. I can't tell, viewing it on an I Pad.

This is a rem 700VS ( Varmint Special) They made the VSSF also ( Varmint Stainless Steel fluted) They came in several calibers, but the 308, 22-250 and 223 where the most popular. They had HS Precision Stocks from the FACTORY. These where brought out in the late eighties or early 90s Remington also offered a Police Special in the 308 usually with black stock. ( HS precision ) I saw several and shot several. I owned a couple of the Varmint calibers and one in the 308. They are not bad as factory offerings. I have run several thousand rounds through mine. To me they are even better, with at minimum, a good trigger job (2 LBS) or a new trigger ( Jewel or Timney) prefer Jewel on this model. Squaring the bolt is not a bad idea if you want to go long range. I would much rather have one of these, than the newer ones that came with different stocks and later offerings that came with the triangle barrels. FWIW These weigh 10 Lbs so it is not something for the faint of heart to carry ALL over. Put a good scope on it, if you buy it. Federal Match grade ammo in 168 gr is going to be your proving ground. But when you roll your own, The best way to do is with Lapua brass, Federal primers 210M ( the M stands for match here NOT MAGNUM) get you some Varget powder or you can try RE15 both are NOT sensitive to temp changes. Not all of Alliant powders are this way though. Well actually neither are all of Hodgdons. Go with some Sierra 168 gr and some 175 gr bullets. Try both to see if your gun prefers one over the other. With the slower Twists the Rem usually uses, my money is on the 168s Both need to be the HPBT Match Kings for accuracy testing. I use the 46gr of Varget a lot for my rifle. Try a few different lengths on the bullet. Sad thing about these guns is that Remington uses a long lead with them. Hopefully you do not have to go over 700.00 for the rifle. Bore scoping it would be best since it is older and you don't know enough yet about it's history. The caliber should be in your favor as apposed to the 22-250 or 223. why ?? Because one of those calibers was probably shot to hell shooting Pdogs and coyotes. Before shooting it, Clean it real good to make sure there is no copper fouling. A little JB paste might help if groups are not real tight. Unless barrel is shot out. But it shouldn't be. This caliber can be a lot of fun with the 125gr too. If you can get it cheap enough and the barrel is needing to be replaced, then consider letting a gunsmith replace it with a precision barrel. www.6mmbr.com/index.htmlThis website will be your friend for loads and other stuff related. Barrel does not look heavy enough for the Varmint Special. It would need to be .830" diameter at muzzle. I still think the stock is B&C too. Note the GB listing for the exact stock. I had one of these on a custom rifle, just like it checkered. www.gunbroker.com/item/687868935

Yes, barrel is not nearly heavy enough for a varmint model (I have one, so I know...).
Looks to be a very nice rifle though, and I bet it shoots as good as it looks... I've always had good luck with Remington 700's. Reliable and accurate....

If we could see the Bolt handle better that would help. But then it may have had it changed also. The view of the left side of the action would be the Tell All.

I'm terrible with Rem's bc I only own 1 a CS 700 in 350 Rem Mag. I was going to say a 700 SPS variety.
