Its a nice, well built, accurate gun.
A bit heavy at 42 ounces, but handles well.
Tight built, except for the .432" throats. Still no leading when shooting .430-.431" cast bullets.
I have a few nice DA 44 Specials. But, my picks have always been Single Actions. My FA-97 and Ruger FT Bisleys closing in fast.

A flat top would be my first choice, buttt I do not own a double action revolver. I think its time!

Consider a S&W 69 as well. Perfect 44 special DA IMO, and a better trigger than the Ruger.

Consider a S&W 69 as well. Perfect 44 special DA IMO, and a better trigger than the Ruger. But then the Ruger doesn't have that idiot IL or a floating firing that may not ignite many primers. You pay your money and take your changes with the modern S&Ws. I speak from experience...twice. I now stick to Smiths with no lock and the firing pin mounted on the hammer. YMMV, Dave

This is true, but disabling the lock is a simple job and C&S makes an extended firing pin if there are ignition issues.
Agreed on taking your chances, but that's doubly true for Ruger these days. I did have to clock my barrel on the 69 a bit to get the sight upright and the action needed attention.
Really it's a matter of preference. Both are good guns. You can't get a 5 inch S&W though, so there's that.

YMMV, Dave Depends on who built it and on what day, I have both the model 69 4in and the 5 inch blued GP100 44 spcl. My Ruger wins hands down.

Have 3 Specials now. Best shooter is probably the 5.5" Bisley Flat top, prettiest is the Colt NF 5.5", the handiest and the one I shoot the most is a S&W 24-3 with 4" bbl. Plan to keep them all.

At least look at the model 69. I have both the 4 1/4" and the 2 3/4", the four incher has replaced my Mountain Guns for outdoors carry.

My 69 4.25" is my woods gun, it has earned that position due to accuracy, ease of carry, (compared to a 5 inch pre 29) and it is as powerful a handgun as I need.
