ok , it has been a long time since I have reloaded. Just getting back into it .I am starting back to reloading a 41 mag in a ruger hunter and a 480 ruger and soon to be a 500 Linebaugh. So here is the question I am setting up my 480 dies , (480 and 500 will be shot out of a encore barrel single shot only) so do I need to roll crimp them or crimp them at all ? I now I will have to crimp for the 41 dance it is a revolver. Also In 480 and 500 all I have for Col is for a hornady col for a 325 grain bullet I adjusted my bullet seater on a dummy round to get me a col to the center of the crimp grove that is 1.670 .the col of the 325 hornady bullet col is 1.650. should they be same.
The case is starline the bullets are Montana bullet company 400 grain wfn-gc primers cci350 and powder will be h110. contacted hodgdon and they said a starti g load for this would be 18 to 20.5 does this sound right to u guys.

Crimp em all. Crimp .41 Mag for obvious revolver reason. And crimp the bigger bores for single shot application for the additional HOLDBACK to supplement firm case wall grip in bullet----which is established between sizing die and expander plug. Crimp supplements but does not replace NECK TENSION. I prefer case mouth to roll into the top of the crimp groove or crimp cannelure.
crimp for a straight wall single---in conjunction with slow powder such as Win 296/H110 or 4227 helps ignition, analogous to not letting an engine’s exhaust valve open too soon. Slow powder requires more containment for ignition than fast powder, and you don’t want the air space to grow ahead of combustion. To put it country simple, if you bell the mouth, crimp it. I agree... depending on the cartridge & powder chosen, I usually get better consistency in my velocities in my Contenders with some crimp... particularly with slower powders
