I am needing some help from ya'll. I have a Vaquero, 2 digit prefix, and am wondering if 18.5 grains of 2400 powder under a 250 grain XTP is safe for my pistol.
I shoot this load in my New Model Blackhawk and I think it would be ok for the Vaquero but want to be sure.
Thank ya, hunter966

If the 2 digit Vaq is the first model with case colors, then sure its the same strength as a Blackhawk. Not good for the NEW VAQUERO though. Quite a load, must be a literal blast!

It does have the case colors. All in all it's not that bad, of course it feels a lot better in the Blackhawk.
The Vaquero's got the plow handle and the Blackhawk has a Bisley.
I sure appreciate the help.

As long as it doesn't say NEW Vaq on the side, its the early model. Some of the New Vaqs had case colors early on so that's not enough by itself to say go. And the Vaq is going to be a little lighter with the lighter and thinner top strap, and no rear sights. Whats the barrel length on the Vaq?

I shooter 19.5gr 2400 in my Ruger New vaquero with a 270 SAA bullet from a Mihec mold.

You will beat hell out of that gun and be looking for parts sooner than you should I think. The NV guns are not rated for the kind of abuse of the earlier Vaq or a Blackhawk, unless I am just nuts.

You're definitely not nuts...That's WAY too hot for a New Vaquero. I wouldn't even dream about putting my NV's through that kind of punishment!

Take it up with John Linebaugh. He personally recommended 19 to 20 gr 2400 or 24 gr H110 both with Win Large pistol primers. IN a NEW VAQUERO. I made sure he understood that. He has a NEW VAQUERO and he personally uses 24 gr H110 in his with the same bullet. Ask him what he loads in a 1903 Colt SAA. Would we say he know some about guns especially the 45 Colt?

I don't know him, some on here do, so I cannot vouch for what he told you. I just believe that the NV is not rated for the same level of +P loads as the Blackhawk.

My midframed guns are held below 21,000 psi. Really don't care what anyone of any pedigree says. Of course, what anyone else does with his guns is fine with me. But, won't stand beside him when he's shooting.

He has a NEW VAQUERO and he personally uses 24 gr H110 in his with the same bullet. Ask him what he loads in a 1903 Colt SAA. Would we say he know some about guns especially the 45 Colt? Here are some facts. Whatever you choose to do with them you are strictly on your own: 1) In "Sixgun Cartridges And Loads" (1936) Keith says speaking of his 250 grain Keith bullet: "I have used up to 22 grains of Hercules #2400 with bullet sized .452" or .002" over groove diameter in older guns with .450" groove diameter and size .454" for newer guns with larger bore diameter... This load is a maximum." At the time Keith was using balloon head brass which has a greater capacity than solid head brass which arrived in the mid-1950s. 2) In "Sixguns by Keith" (1955) again speaking of his #454424 bullet: Use 18.5 grains 2400 in either old web cases or new solid had cases... The charge is a maximum." 3) When I began reloading in the mid-1950s I took his recommendation has my standard heavy .45 Colt load using his bullet and 18.5 grains #2400 in 2nd Generation Colt Single Actions. Keith worked with 1st Generation Colts made prior to WWII. When the Ruger .45 Blackhawk came along I use the same charge and powder with 300 grain bullets. 4) The original Vaquero was/is as strong as the Blackhawk, however the New Vaquero is the same size as a Colt Single Action Army and "probably" made of stronger steels. 5) 18.5 or 19.5 grains of #2400? Again you are on your own and I make no recommendations.

Thanks JT. In a Bisley Blackhawk I shot those kinds of loads and it was plenty! In the old model Vaq I prefer less buck and roar,8-9 grs of Unique is where I like to be. In a New Vaq I would be shooting Colt type loads, but I guess I am just not as adventurous as some are.
