..in three guns.
Starline Brass CCI SR Primer 10.5 grain of AA #7 (max) 85 grain Hornady XTP JHP
Guns:
S&W Model 53 6" converted to .327
1687 fps with a 77 fps extreme spread
Ruger SP-101 3"
1442 fps with a 110 fps spread
Ruger LCR with 2" barrel
1313 fps with a 76 fps spread
Extraction was firm but smooth. Most primers were fairly rounded although some were slightly flattened. Max book load with this bullet/powder combination runs 10.3-10.5 grains. I had already made up and fired a few test rounds with 9-9.5-10-10.5 but unfortunately didn't have the time to chrono them.
For daily use the load may be just a little much for the LCR....

Bob, why did you settle on the small rifle primer?

From the reading I have done on the .327, because of the high pressure that is run, Magnum SP or standard SR primers were recommended. I have been using SR primers in .38 Super for decades and have lots of them on hand so that is what I used.
Don't know if it is true or not but read that Federal SR primers are the same as their SP Magnum primers just in a different box...
I may try some SP Magnum primers next time for the S&W 53 as I did get some misfires when shooting DA probably because of the thicker cups. Zero problems with the Rugers when firing DA...
