so I have 18" of 475 barrel extra ( not spoken for for existing projects ) coming in a few weeks, when it's made ( which is likely to trim out at 16 - 17" trimming off the ends & with chambering )... I'd like some sort of companion rifle for my 480 Rugers ( Bisley & Alaskan ) thinking a single shot is the easiest, but would love a lever gun, or even a bolt action carbine...
one of the things I need to look at is finding a project gun, & how much work would be involved in the process of converting it to 480... I think the 480 Ruger has a .540" Rim diameter ( critical for fitting the bolt face, extractor etc. ) just going through chamberings in my head... Think the closest is the 30-40 Krag
any other cartridges you guys can think of??? I'm thinking one of the easiest would be a Ruger #1 or #3 that was originally chambered in 30-40 Krag... but honestly I'd love a lever gun... but I'm afraid that's more work that my local retired custom guy would be willing to do... so I'd have to find someone willing to do that work... thoughts there???
or any other suggestions for guns & or caliber to start with???

I've got a Ruger #1 chambered in 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger. It serves that roll rather well.

ENCORE... I do love my single shot rifles... but I've yet to have a #1 or #3 find it's way to my house... this 480 project might be a good excuse... I'm watching a bubba'd #3 in 30-40 Krag... but I think they want too much money for it, for as ugly as it is... so not sure if I can make that one happen... but I'll keep looking... it'll still be 6 weeks or so, before my .475 barrels get here... so I have some time

I have a 22" H&R in 475 Linebaugh that David Clements built for himself. It is a lot of power in a lightweight rifle. I don't think I want to shoot a case full of H110 under a 400 grain bullet out of it.

got an interesting thought... I ran across these... Ruger American Ranch Rifles... at a volume buy... price looks very good www.gunbroker.com/item/652750505this is a detach mag rifle... thinking if I could find a semi auto mag that could be massaged to fit the 480 Ruger perhaps even a 44 Magnum or 50 A.E. Automag magazine, & fit it inside the rifle mag... it might be possible to make a changeable mag bolt action repeater... how cool would that be???

Got an e-mail from Mcgowen, that my barrels shipped yesterday... they were supposed to be out 6-7 weeks, & shipped 1.5 weeks after I finalized my order

My barrels got here last Friday... everything looks good... well for the cheap price we have a lot of machining... 1-3/8" diameter tubes...
was again looking at project / donor guns... thought about an Enfield Mark 1 bolt action single shot... they did convert quite a few of these to .410 single shots... thinking if sporterized might be able to find one reasonably priced, keep it as a single shot until & if I could find a magazine that might work down the road???

... or I could stop trying to reinvent the wheel, & just go to MGM & have an 18" 480 Ruger barrel made... & buy my 1st Encore action... of course we already know that is a slippery slope... least it was with the Contenders
