Just got my Model 27 back from S&W...She had an 8 3/8" barrel and I was able to locate a 3 1/2" barrel and had Smith change them.... That`s a Lawrence 120 holster made for the 3 1/2". I was like a little kid at Christmas opening the package that Fed Ex delivered.....Just added another photo of the 27 on a framed original post-war S&W advertisement for the 3 1/2" 27 which they titled "Nemesis of Law Breakers".... The patch on the left is old enough to have moth holes while the one on the right was made buy a gun distributor for his clients.....

What? James WHY? I hope you kept the barrel unless something was wrong with it. I DO LIKE the 3 1/2" But I also like the 8 3/8 for hunting.

I have a pair of Model 27's. A 5" & an *-3/8" one. BOTH are sweet. That shorter bbl one looks might nice there. You have made me think a bit on one like that,,,,!

CT, I bought that gun on consignment with the 8 3/8" barrel and the old Bushnell 2x attached... There was a nice cover pic on Handloader showing the same gun and that is the reason I bought it a while ago... Used it in the field a few times and when I saw more and more 3 1/2"s I decided to make the switch... Searched until I found a short barrel in good condition and sent everything to S&W... They returned the 8 3/8" barrel with the gun.... Still have a number of 357`s but everything hunted with that caliber is pretty much covered by my 41`s.... That`s why I sold my FA`s 353....

Looks great!
I'm surprised S&W would do the barrel swap. I thought I'd read they don't like to do any work on anything they don't have parts in house for just in case things go bad.

I understand and I do not use my 357 that much either. It was very noticeable (the flash and loud noise) compared to the 45 colt that I play with most. I must say too, that you have done one heck of a job with your FA 41.
Now tell me what you plan on shooting in the way of ammo? I am sure that you have some good pet loads. And tell me about the balance compared to the 5" 27 ?
27s are a favorite of mine and that 3 1/2" one, got my attention too.

I love the 27. Beautiful fit and finish; and a great shooter. I'm more into distance shooting than carry or SD work. Therefore, the 8 3/8" barrel is the one that fits me. It actually hurts when I read someone has customized and switched the barrels. Thank the gods you still have the barrel.
It doesn't seem fair when someone cuts the barrel. I can't add 5 3/8" to destroy a 3" barrel.
All this goes to the side when it comes to letting a man do what he wants with his own life. Freedom and independence pretty much trumps everything.

Hey OP,
How do you like the service grips? Everyone's hand is different and I have a tricky time trying to get comfortable with those. Do you keep your standard grip? They sure look nice on that 27.
