Buddy of mine got a new .45acp pistol caliber carbine he wants me to try so I started loading up some loads. I didn't want to use lead bullets because it's not mine, it's brand new and I don't want to risk any leading.
Anyway most of my .45acp target shooting is with plated bullets from Ranier and Berry 's. I started with them and ran into an odd problem. The Tanker 230gr RN bullets loaded easily, but the Tanker 200gr TC and Berry's 200gr HPs would not load.
They were more often than not stripping the plating off one side and buckling up &/or stripping onto the brass. I measured samples of all bullets and they were all Identical: .4520"-.4525".
My dies resize but do not have a plug to expand the case mouth. So my questions: 1. Why would this happen? 2. What can I do about it?
I have never had this problem before so am perplexed.
Many thanks Mark

You might want to look into a 45 caliber Lyman "M" die. RCBS neck expander dies should solve the problem as well. What brand of die set are you using?

I need to look. I have many different brands and don't remember those. I'll get back to you.

Are all of these bullets ones you have loaded before with the same seating die? Is it mixed brass?

It is mixed brass. I have used these dies and bullets before but usually use my Dillon so it's been quite a while.

I ran into the same problem some time back when Rainier changed the shape of their 200 grain bullets. In order to load properly I had to increase the flare on the case.It did not take much but it made all the difference in the world while loading.

My dies are Lyman...should have remembered since they are on my Lyman turret press. Peter that seem to be exactly the case as Berrys and Tanker 200gr are both new boxes. So I guess an M die is in my future.

If you have Lyman reloading dies chances are the expander has the same profile and diameter as the M die. Suggest you remove the expander and observe. Hopefully, it will save some unnecessary expense.

Already done. There is no expander on it, only a decapping pin. M die is in hand

Tested. All working perfectly now.... Just a kiss of an opening and bullets slip right in and seat with a tiny taper crimp... perfect!
Thanks everyone for your input!

Reloading neophyte question: all it needed was the expander?

You didn't have a 3 die set with the expander die? My Lyman .45 set has 3 dies. Any decent straight wall case die set has an expander die that bells the case mouth for easy start.

Excellent article "Loading Plated Bullets" by Duane Thomas and published in Dillon's Blue Press. I think the June 2017 issue. I saved the article but not the whole issue. My guess on issue date.
Update: Go to Dillon's Precision Reloading Bench for more info on article. Thomas' article is listed in the table of contents for June 2017. Don't think it is available online but back issues are available.
