If I wanted to buy a little back-up Derringer that would serve as a last resort, "It's use this or die," gun, what would you guys suggest for caliber? Right now, I'm thinking 10mm. It packs a hell of a punch, and if I'm down to two final shots, I want them to get the job done fast.

My first Bond Arms was a 44mag. With 260 Partition gold factory ammo, it was "exhilarating". It actually shot really well if you could keep concentrating with that horrendous trigger pull. Wish I hadn't sold that one as they eventually quit making them for some reason. Hahaha. I think I still have a small one in 357 mag. Best built derringers out there in my opinion.

I just wish they werent so big. But yes they are built well.
I had a 45 Colt and 45 auto. Like Zeus said, horrible trigger pull.

I have two currently and another on the way. I'd say 45/410 or .357 magnum. 10mm is also a good option. The trigger pull isn't too bad as long as you pull it down and back and not straight back. As I write this I am carrying a Bond Arms Ranger with federal .410 000 buck as the first shot and a Buffalo Bore .45 colt standard pressure heavy 200 grain gdhp for the second shot.

Mine's a 410/45Colt. For what it is I like it a lot. For close up work, the trigger is adequate. I need to find a holster for it as I think it would make good snake medicine.

For that size and weight, I'd would look at a small single stack 9mm with an extra mag. I would prefer a last 14 shots to a last 2 shots, even if they were only 9mm.

I'll have to dig mine out. I thought I used to pull up rather than back to make the trigger tolerable. Been a LONG time since I fired one of them.

Jack Huntington did a trigger job on mine and I could still never shoot it well enough that I would trust it.

A few years back the same thought hit me. Wanted a two banger in 44 as a back up or min carry. I found a LGS that had 2 of different manufacterers. Was surprised to find they were near to the same weight and bulk, only a bit thinner or flatter, than the 5 shot 44 spec CA Bulldog that I've already bonded well with. Dropped that idea. If ya just gotta, well we understand that !

Do think if the idea still intrigues..look at the Double-Taps. Extra two rounds store in butt of grip. A bit thinner, flatter than older designs. I have not shot one.

Whatever you end up with, I recommend you not rely on the expansion of hollowpoint ammunition with it. I'm concerned you won't see much if any appreciable expansion from the velocities available with such a short barrel. Ammo is available from companies like Buffalo Bore that is loaded with either hard cast wadcutters, or semi-wadcutters with large sharp-edged meplats. It can be found with std velocity loads that should be easier to control than full power magnums. I did shoot a Bond 410/45 derringer belonging to a friend some years ago. I couldn't keep the grip from twisting in my hand in recoil, so a controlled second shot seemed beyond reality for me.

I've defintely slayed the snakes with my Snake Slayer. I don't know why you'd use anything other than .410 buckshot? Federal 2 1/2" 000 grouped very well at 7 yards for me (<5"). Shot just about every .410 buckshot/self defense .410 ammo there is and the Federal smoked 'em all. Plus, met Gordon Bond at SHOT 2012. Heckuva nice guy. Took the time to talk to a nobody like me.
