I just shipped my .500 S&W Mag BFR to Jack Huntington for a grip mod and a muzzle brake. Since I had to shell out $100 ro ship it, I have no desire to ever ship it again! So while Jack has it, is there anything else I should have him do to it while it's there? All suggestions are welcome.

Does it need an action job? Does it need a better fitting base pin? Are you happy with the hammer contour? That is kind of an open ended question that should only be dictated by the depths of your wallet at any given time...

You may want to consider special sights, both front and rear, sling swivels plus a sling and if necessary an extended ejector and longer ejector housing.
From a pure aesthetics standpoint you should look at cylinder flutes, beveling the front of the cylinder and refinishing the stainless steel surfaces.
What a great single action revolver!
Happy & safe shooting,

Happy & safe shooting, J.D. Press The sights are a good idea. As for the ejector rod, I don't know if it could get any longer. As for the flutes, they do look good, but I like unfluted cylinders. Maybe have the finish polished could give it some pizzaz.

Front sight and action job would be my suggestions. He can slick that trigger up quite a bit.

When I sent mine to him I got the grip mod, cut the barrel down to the longer ejector rod length, longer ejector, polish the cylinder, and do an action job. It was well worth it. Like you I thought that the shipping was expensive so I might as well get it all done then and not have to send it a second time.

Trigger/action job yes, Jack is one of the best., ......Just an idea (probably a bad one!) since you're having him do a muzzle brake....maybe think about having him do a screw on muzzle brake that also acts as a barrel band? I know I'm probably not explaining very well, but a muzzle brake that screws on to the end of the barrel that butts right up against the ERH (that is unless you want a long barrel).... While I'm not a big fan of muzzle brakes, I've seen a few screw on/off ones that Jack has done and they are seamless and slick! ....again, just an idea...since it's your money we're spending! HA!

Could have a local FFL ship it USPS for a lot less than $100!

Got a big kick in the butt when I bought a gun from a custom guy across the country and he charged me all of $16.00 bucks to ship to my ffl. When I ship to him cost me a hundred! Lol

Front sight and action job would be my suggestions. He can slick that trigger up quite a bit. The trigger I like, but still, a pair of skilled hands could always improve things 😀 For the front sight... Maybe get one of those Freedom Arms ones with interchangeable blade?

I have a BFR that Jim Stroh did a trigger job on and it is the best trigger that I have felt on any gun - zero creep, crisp break, zero over travel. I sent it to JRH for his grip frame extension and grips, and he asked me about the trigger and who did the trigger work...said he had it apart to examine what was done. So, even if you are satisfied with the factory trigger, there are improvements that can made. I will agree that ft/rr sights is another good idea. I also had my barrel shortened and wish I had the writing removed from the barrel too. Other than these few suggestions, there really isn't much more needed as they are pretty darn good from the factory. Here's a couple of pics of mine...I have since installed a Bowen rear sight.

That's gorgeous! What front sight is that? Not my gun, but I suspect it is a Stroh. Wish they were still available. The profiled base sure is nice to look at. As far as the grip modification is concerned, I just got one back from him. It is a SBH 4 5/8" barrel and after handling it compared to one of my Bisley's, I have to agree with many that the plowhandle grip frame with the JRH mod feels better. It also makes a 4 5/8" 44 Magnum with stout 290 LFNGC controllable. I'm probably will have him do a Bisley grip modification in the very near future. I understand about the shipping and have asked the very same question here before. Get anything you may want done now. If one of my very good friends wasn't also my FFL, it would hurt shipping a handgun. I keep him supplied with good cast bullets and occasionally a bottle of Belvedere Vodka.

Nice idea. It would seem a thread protector could be fashioned to look like a barrel band if the brake were not in use. On another note relieving sharp edges could be something to consider.
