I have been reloading since Carter was in office, but I just realized that I have never loaded for the "Special .44" . All of my 44 loading was for the magnuns, with a lot of them being Elmer's 2400 loads. I now have a Colt New Frontier in the special chambering, and wonder what loads to use. My 45th edition of Lyman's manual shows 245 gr cast loads with Unique going up to 8.0 grains, where the 49th edition only goes up to 6.9. I also thought I read that John Taffin "jugged" a chamber, with a "Skeeter" load of 7.0 grains of Unique, on a Colt NF. So, I don't want to have a "blowed-up"Colt, but would like more than a Cowboy load to shoot. I would like to stick to Unique (because I have a lot), but I could use Bullseye, or IMR-4227. All of my other powders are more suited to the magnums. So, can you help a fellow out with some good 245 gr cast loads, for this new to me 44 Colt? Also, does anyone know what issue of Handloader had the .44 Special loads? Mobjack Former 44 mag loader of H-110 & 2400.

With IMR 4227 mine loved 17.5grs with LSWC. 5.5 grs of 231 was nice as was 9.0grs of HS6. With the 240 Hornady XTP, mine likes 7.5grs of Unique. No issues. I seriously doubt 7grs of Uni is going to jug a chamber on a modern Colt. Colts are not wimpy revolvers.

ONE CHAMBER HAD THE BOLT SLOT CUT TOO DEEP AT THE FACTORY AND IT "PRINTED " ON THE BRASS WITH KEITH'S LOAD (17.5 #2400/250 CAST) THAT WAS 30 PLUS YEARS AGO AND I AM STILL USING THAT COLT WITH OFFENDING CHAMBER MARKED SO I JUST USE THE OTHER FIVE. SKEETER'S 7.5 UNIQUE LOAD, WHICH HE GOT FROM ELMER BY THE WAY,WITH A 250 CAST WILL NOT HARM ANY COLT NEW FRONTIER. SEVERAL ISSUES OF HANDLOADER HAVE HAD .44 SPECIAL LOADS. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Thanks to John Taffin and all for answering my questions, and thanks to Ray for the bump on the 44 loads. I don't have to worry about a "weak" Colt. Now I've got some loads to work with.

A 280 grain LBT loaded with 18.0 grains of H110. That is more than a cowboy load. It will not blow up your New frontier. If you do not cast, then you could try the bullets (280gr) from Matts bullets and have him harden them if you think they need it.

I have some 280's in the mail I'm going to give a go through one of my 44 specials. Currently shooting a 260, curious to see how the 280's end up comparing.

Not awful sure, but I downloaded the latest issue of Handloader this morning before work and I think there is an expanded article by Pearce on 44 special loads in it.

This latest issue of Handloader (June No. 308) has a whole host of .44 special loads using Standard pressure(15.5k psi). It's a great read.

Yes it is. It is the most 15,500psi loads I have ever seen, in one place.

Here's a few loads I shoot in my Colt New Frontier and some I use in my Ruger Bisley. The Colt has cylinder throats that run .433 so I use larger diameter bullets in it.
Gun: Colt New Frontier 7 1/2 bbl. .44 Special
Oregon Trail 200 gr. RNFP (.4315) Powder: VihtaVuori N320 5.9 grs. Primer: Federal 150 Case: Winchester Velocity: 902.19 fps
Bullet: Montana Bullet Works 240 gr. SWCGC (WW/.432/SPG/Hornady GC) Powder: Alliant Power Pistol 6.9 grs. Primer: Winchester Large Pistol Case: R-P Velocity: 882 fps
Bullet: Leadhead/RCBS 44-250K (.432) Powder: IMR SR-4756 7.8 grs. Primer: Federal 150 Case: Starline Avg. Vel.: 920.43 fps
*****************************************
Gun: Ruger Flattop Bisley 5 1/2 bbl. .44 Special
Bullet: Hornady 200 gr. XTP-HP Powder: Alliant Power Pistol 8.0 grs. Primer: Winchester Large Pistol Case: Starline LOAL: 1.470 Average Velocity: 972.25 fps
Bullet: Missouri Bullet Company 200 gr. RNFP (.430/Cowboy Alloy/Hi-Tek) Powder: VihtaVuori N320 5.9 grs. (Little Dandy Rotor #11) Primer: Federal 150 Case: Magtech 44 Special
Oops! Forgot about my USFA Single Action Dual Cylinder. This load was very accurate but shoots too high (sights regulated for 200 gr. 44-40s)
Bullet: Lyman 429421 250 gr. Keith (.429/11 BHN) Powder: Alliant Bullseye 4.2 grs. Primer: Federal 150 Case: Winchester
