Planning to load Hornady 210 XTP's for the .41 Magnum (FAM83).
The powder and primer I have on hand are Alliant 2400 and Winchester WLP.
Hornady lists the following:
210 Grain HP XTP Primer: Federal 150 Powder: 2400 (16 to 20 Grains)
I am new to reloading and usually follow the instructions - 100%.
What is a safe approach to substituting the WLP Primer for the Federal 150 (Assuming I start at 16 Grains and work my way up to 19 or so and monitor)?
or
Should I just buy some 150s?
Thanks,
Hawg

I use CCI 300's with 2400 in the .41 Mag; CCI 350's with 296. Both are great with those powders. I long ago settled on 17.5 gr. for milder, and 18.6 gr. for heavier when I use 2400 with a 210 in the .41 Mag., so the range you're looking at should be fine.

The WLP's should be just fine for you.

2400 is my favorite powder for 41 mag. Good luck with the FA.

Thanks everyone; reloads worked like a champ with the WLP Primer.

I use the Winchester LP primer for all my .41 loads that will be shot single action. Since they list it for both Standard and Magnum loads and they are rated for the hard to ignite Ball Powders like 296/H110 figure I can't go wrong. Do prefer Federal LP primers when loads are going to be used double action in S&W revolvers... The Winchester and CCI primers will occasionally fail to ignite the first time around DA... hawg..what length barrel did you get? I have one with a 6" barrel that is just an excellent long range shooter... Some good info for .41 shooters... castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?276144-41-Magnum-41-Special-Load-Data-CenterBob

Bob, it is the 6" - really nice compromise. Thanks for the reference. I loaded the 210 XTPs, but I have 250 Hard Cast(s) waiting to be loaded from Leadheads - 230 WFN.
Plan is to load the following:
Brass: Starline Primer: WLP Powder: 2400 (17 Grains)

Another question Bob, if 2400 needs to be run at near max loads to burn all powder - what is a good powder for 1100 to 1250 fps in 41 and 44 Mag? I did notice that both the .41 and .44 were dirty for the number of rounds I fired.

17.5gr of 2400 under a 215gr LSWC runs 1240fps from my 5.5" Bisley. I run WLP or CCI#300 primers with no issues whatsoever.

If you want maximum velocity out of the .41 with heavy boolits nothing beats H110/296... Just fill the case until the bottom of the bullet sits right on top of the powder. With the Cast Performance/Leadhead 250 grain LBT WFN that is right at 20 grains. With the Cast Performance 255 LBT it is 22.0 grains. Most of the jacketed bullets take between 22 and 24 grains depending where the crimping groove is. For midrange loads I like Unique. From a 4" barrel: 220 grain bullet: 8.0/950 9.0/1100 10.0/1180 Add 75-100 fps for a 6" barrel. I've also used SR4756, which unfortunately has been discontinued. Blue Dot works very well also... I think most any medium burning rate powder slower than Unique and faster than 2400 will work well. Use a heavy crimp regardless of the load...it helps with the initial bullet pull that helps burn the powder better. I use the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die for almost all calibers I reload for. Puts a great crimp on and also makes sure the case and bullet are in tight contact. I have shot nothing but heavy bullet loads from mine as I have other .41s for lighter loads... Bob
