Well after a little bit of a warm up in the weather (9 degrees) I decided to venture out to the shooting range & try a few more loads through my new to me SP101 327. Last week I fired one cylinder full through the gun just to make sure everything was ok after Fermin shipped it from Texas. The first thing I noticed was that it had a very nice trigger, I don't know if it had been worked on or not but it broke like frozen lettuce & I'm very happy with it. Today my plan was to park where I could shoot from the window of my truck but the snow was so deep I couldn't find a place to set my cardboard target so I had to get out of the truck & shoot at the rifle range. Problem was I didn't have my pistol rest or any of my sandbags, they were stashed on my 4 wheeler so I would have to just put my elbows on the table & shoot without any support for the gun....not very good for proper group testing. I had 3 different loads with me, the first one being the same load I shot last week, 5.5 grs. of Longshot & a 114 gr. GC HP slug that was powder coated. It's the top left group on the paper. Next up was the same bullet but weighing 118 grs. & 7 grs. of Longshot & the last group was 13 grs. of H110 & the 135 gr. Ferminator GC HP, this one was the only one not powder coated as I was wanting to shoot up some old ammo. All loads used Winchester SP primers & the distance was 23 yds. You can see the 25 yd. target just to the left of my cardboard target. The snow was deep & I was wearing my Croc's & didn't want to step in anymore deep snow, my feet were freezing as were my hands. I hadn't planned on shooting outside. The first group went pretty good even without a rest but the cold hands got me pretty quick as you can see & some shots started moving around a bit. I'm sure with a rest & a warmer day this little cracker jack will really be a shooter. Can't wait to get after the Jackrabbits with it. This is our 25 yd. & 50 yd. range, lots of snow & too much for Croc's. This is going to be a bunny buster supreme as soon as I can get out to the desert. Haven't tried the double action pull yet but my son can work his magic if it's not up to snuff. Dick

Hot diggity dog! I'm making progress!! Sixshot Dick is up to 5.5 grains of powder!
You know Dick, that pound of powder won't last forever at that rate...
Did that SP101 feel heavier with all that powder you were packing??

Dick.... 9 degrees fahrenheit? Too much snow for crocks? While my feet don’t own a pair of crocks, any amount of snow is too deep for a pair of slippers made from bullet holes & rubber. When your feet freeze, the carcass isn't far behind. Man fell through the ice up here the other day, 50 feet from shore on a lake carved when a glacier cut a mountain in half. The man was ice fishing; got pulled out, taken to hospital 40 minutes away. Attendants coded him for an hour. Core temperature 84, they couldn’t bring it up. Now we know you’re not treading lake ice in crocks, but a snowbank isn't much better.
Jerry Moran took me to a winter IHMSA match in Michigan, where I borrowed one of his fine Pythons. (Region 3 Director Moran skun me by a point or two, an incredible winter performance.) The auto workers shooting steel served coffee between relays to thaw our trigger fingers. Nobody would have survived the match in crocks.
Good shooting, David Bradshaw

If you run out of powder, I'll lend you a couple of ounces. Next time stay home, take the crocs off, install your feet under the blanket you got for Christmas, turn on the TV and watch a ball game. Nothing is worth getting cold feet for! Good shooting any way. I'd like to see Fermin shoot up here in the snow.
I went up to the range here and it hadn't been plowed out from the gate which had 6 padlocks on it anyway. At least your range is open enough to shoot.

There goes the Dawg, always putting the spurs to me!! As I said, I didn't plan on getting out of the truck, I was going to shoot from the window so I could rest my elbows on the door frame but the drifts were 4 feet deep so I couldn't get the box put out. Anyway 23 yds. worked out pretty good just shooting off my elbows & it did tell me this little 4" gun is going to be a dandy rabbit buster (and ground squirrels) One thing I noticed was that 7 grs. of Longshot with the 118 gr. GC HP "seemed" to have close to the same recoil as the 13 grs. of H110 with the 135 gr. Ferminator. really hard to tell with cold fingers, hands & tooties but I'm sure 7 grs. of Longshot is ripping pretty good. I'll chronograph when it warms up as I think that load will shoot for me when I shoot off a rest. My feet felt like ice cubes by the time I made it to El Toro! The Dawg likes to seat both his powder & his bullets, the powder with a small jack hammer & the bullets with a press! You have to admit shooting with no rest that first load will take care of quite a fun squirrels, bunnies, badgers, etc. & yes it did go clear through the BOX.....dang Texans!

Dick you know better than to go out driving in the snow without shoes on! Listen to Mr. Bradshaw. I don't want to hear any news stories about the Great White Badger Hunter/Pig Sitcker Extraordinaire being overcome with hypothermia after his rig went sideways on the snow and ice, ending up in a ditch... What would happen to Fermin and Steve if they didn't have anyone to razz once in awhile??? I shudder at the thought.

Well our shooting range gets used a lot, pretty much every day of the year & the road down into the range was packed down so not much chance of getting stuck but if I did either someone would show up sooner or later or I could walk back to the highway. Even if I walked all the way home it's under 2 miles, surely "Croc Holliday" could make it that far.
I'm really liking this little gun & I'm thinking about making a Jackrabbit safari out on the big desert. Of course I'll wear my insulated rubber pac's & all the other necessary gear it takes when you make one of those kinds of hunts in bad weather, been doing it all my life. In years past the fox ranchers loved me, all gone now. We could easily cover the bottom of a pick up bed every trip, sometimes a double layer.

Nice SP, Dick... Nice shooting to. Ahh, what a good post to read while having some coffee. Some good belly laughs and good groups to boot Dick I think you might want to retire them Croc's until at least springtime when out at the range In Waist Deep Snow Unless, Croc's come out with hip boots!? Geez, even us flatlander city slickers knows that Keep your tootsies warm. Good stuff. BigBore44

Hahahaha and you always buck like a bronc!!! Dang it's a good thing we don't live closer. We wouldn't get a thing done for all the tom foolery! Add a little Callshot in and it sets off the cackling like a chicken coop with a fox inside. He wouldn't last a day either. We would have to rush Callshot to the ER cuz he would surely choke on his sunflower seeds trying to keep up.
For you guys watching me torture Dick, I had told him I busted my Nikon sixgun scope on Hoovers Hammer. Dick promptly stepped up and sent me a Burris 2-7 Pistol Scope. It arrived and I was glad to see it was a gloss blue finish. I hope it's a tough one Dick because the first thing I did was drop it in the garage! Anyway, I plan to polish HH until it glows in the dark so the Burris will be a perfect match and make a special sixgun that much more special. Not Callshot special but still...

Dick, surely none of us would question your toughness or wisdom with regard to being in the outdoors. We just being protective of a treasured national resource, you! Now, I'd be more concerned with dropping the hammer on whatever woodpecker it was that poked out the middle of those little lipsticks in the last picture! I'm sure we'd all love to be there with you Sir.
