What is your opinion on current production Winchesters? I know a lot of people don't like that they are made in Japan, but from what I have heard they are better that they have been in decades. I would love to get a Trapper but now that they are out of production they are way out of the average price range even used. I wouldn't mind an 1892 Short Rifle which is close to the Trapper. I would be interested in the .357 but it is still a ways off as far as affordability at close to $1000. I like the Henry rifles but want a side load, I would get a Marlin...but you know, Remington and all. What are your thoughts on quality and do any of you own one? www.winchesterguns.com/products/rifles/model-1892/model-1892s-in-current-production/model-1892-short-rifle.htmlAre current production Marlins still as bad as the rumors say? Please advise.

From what I have heard, the current Remlins are pretty decent. If I wanted a Marlin though, I would buy a JM marked one off GB.

I have been quite fortunate in finding USA made Winchesters second hand in both 44 and 45 but I never see a 357. Visually the USA guns always look quite "plain jane" compared to the Jap guns but are less than half the price and they shoot well. I do have a older Marlin 357 that I will probably get rid of as it is micro groove and refuses to shoot cast or plated well. It's fine with jacketed but I want a cheap to shoot plinker. When I do get rid of it I will get a Henry 357 and not look back. I don't care one way or the other how you load it. I don't need tactical speed for a plinker. I also have several Rossi model 92 guns. They work well after a little de-burring and tweeking although disassembly and reassembly is not for the timid.

Still too many problems with the new Remlins (Rem made Marlins) If you want a 357, I would hunt down a nice older JM Marlin 1894/1894C. They are out there and if you hunt hard and look often you can find a deal eventually. You have to look OFTEN and be ready to strike when you find it. That's the key though, looking every spare moment you have and be ready to Buy Now once you find what your after! Last one I got was $575 and that wasn't that long ago...
Good luck on the hunt. I will keep watch for you if you'd like.?
Do you have a set price range?

PS The ONLY WAY I'd buy a new Remlin would be IN PERSON, where I could look it over with a FINE TOOTH COMB!!! Than I'd still be Leary.

Needsmostuff Ive hrard Those 92 Rossi's can try your patience during Disassembly/Assembly I've thought pretty hard about getting the 44 and 454 models. One of these days I'll probably bite the bullet and pull the trigger on one or to Best BigBore44

I have one winchester in 44 Magnum I bought it used & it has extra grade aftermarket wood... it only went hunting one time, with the original owner... don't remember the price... but thought I got a pretty good deal on Gun Broker... then the original owner found the original stock & forearm, & threw those in as well... mine is Japanese I believe... I have 2 Rossi's one used in 357 was an unfired engraved saddle ring carbine, with just a few handling dings... old enough it doesn't have a safety... was not broken in, but a year of CAS shooting & it got reasonably slick... pretty gun, with no issues with that older gun... I also bought a 45 Colt Rossi Used... it was also unfired ( the firing pin would not engage the primer, when I bought it, so I had to have a custom one machined ) that rifle has a stainless octagon barrel, stainless lever, & brass receiver & butt plate... that one was also not broken in... again, one year of CAS & that one smoothed up nicely... it's new enough that it had a safety... which I had removed, when I had the firing pin repaired... the Jap Winchester was much smoother than either Rossi, & the round count is a fraction of whats been put through the Rossi's & it's smoother than either of them

Okay I'm going to get one. Probably be a month or so.
Now do I want the '94 Trapper or 1892 Short Rifle or big loop?

I haven't had experience with a Japanese Winchester, but one of my other hobbies is playing the guitar. Japaneseade guitars are excellent quality, and I imagine that any Winchester made there would be the same. Their craftsmanship is excellent in my experience.
