Would a 5 shot .480 built on a model 29 be doable or too much for the smith to take?

I doubt that frame would tolerate the 480 Ruger regardless of cylinder capacity.
Jack Huntington or Whit could tell you more, but I wouldn't try it.
I just think the frame would stretch starting with the first cylinder full.
Jack makes the Model 29 in his 475 Special. Same diameter, but less pressure.

I guess the cylinder dimensions would be a little small for a 480. A special would make sense; maybe keeping pressures under 20K. A redhawk or srh would be a better platform.

No way. The pressure would be too high IMHO. Jack Huntington has created a .475 wildcat specifically for the N-frame and runs a shooter care than the .480. He keeps the pressures within a safe range. I am having one built as we speak.

I am having one built as we speak. Some call it a 476. Like rechambering a 45 Colt to 475 and cut the rim down in a Blackhawk Low pressure Works great.

I knew I should have kept that 4" 629... dang it all.
