Yeah, he is about laser jet cutter steady. Charles, for my part, aside from the special tools, jigs, and fixtures, is the SPEED at which he accomplishes all of this. My pops says any job is easy if you have the know how and right tools. ;-)

I don't always think to hit the like button. Some of our members like Fermin, Lee, Whitworth, Bradshaw, Fowler, sixshot, callshot, sheriff, Mr. B, Hoover and others here should get an automatic like every time they post. They're input is just that valuable. Along with the technical information we sometimes get a moving personal story or a good laugh. That's why I enjoy this forum so much. Ok, enough atta boys. Back to our regularly scheduled shenanigans.

I had to "like" every post Fermin made in this thread. What an amazing rebuild on that seriously blown Colt!

Ok, some more details. The mainframe on this rebuild was done using .030" mig wire. This allows a finer more precise bead and minimal heat transfer and cleanup.
For the blued parts however a different rod is used. Harton uses a 1/16" diameter high quality mild steel rod reduced to approx. .025-.030" diameter. Again, Less heat, finer bead, easier cleanup. The high quality mild steel rod will take the bluing better than the mig wire.
I find it interesting that Ray, being faced with the same problem of how to fixture a frame in his mill, came to the exact same conclusion as Harton and built a similar fixture to hold the frame. Both also use a self darkening mask when welding. I have tried to watch using a regular mask but the view is so dim I really cant see what I am looking for. I guess I am going to have to get a self darkening mask. Ray said his cost 600 skins.....
edited to correct sizes!!

I held the parts in my hands today. I can yell you a couple of details that will add to the myth. 1. You can NOT see any weld joints. None. Zero. 2. You can NOT tell that top strap is not original to that gun. It is perfect. 3. The welded up edges have been machined and some polishing done(it is not quite finished). I am 99% sure I could shave with some of those edges now. They are BFR sharp. 4. You can NOT tell all of those edges have been altered. They look perfect.
Remember all of this from up close and personal inspection..not looking at pictures. Alan also told me about a few details that I will leave to Fermin since this is his story. But those details are what makes Alan special. To say he is a gunsmith does not give him enough credit.

I spoke to Alan earlier and was just typing too fast trying to take notes. He will assemble this first generation restoration and take some pictures to show the recut serial numbers and other markings. Then since first generation Colt SAA's were charcoal blued this one will go off to Turnbull for the correct finish. He is also going to send the grips out to be restored themselves. And as I said before, he will be trying out a new color case hardening artisan. Should be a dandy!

Again, while in the white, the blemishes that still need to be addressed are readily seen. At the same time, one can also readily see the way he recaptured the lines and screw holes. Hopefully it wont be at Turnbulls shop too long. I need to find out if Harton has also sent off the stocks to be restored.
