Several years ago a guy I worked with knowing I was into guns asked me if I would be interested in buying his father in laws Model 29. The FIL had committed suicide, not with this gun, and they were selling everything. It is a factory engraved 29-10 6 1/2" .44 Magnum.

Is that engraved proper or their "etching" engraving? I have one of the latter.

I really don't know much anything about engraving or the quality of it on this gun. To my eyes it looks pretty good. Why S&W would choose to put the damn lock on such a gun is beyond me and just illustrates the stupidity of the modern day "leadership" of the company. I own two other S&Ws with the lock, a 442 and a .45 Colt Mountain Gun. They are easily removed to prevent tieing your gun up at an inopportune moment but just looking at the stupid thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
