or better off staying with SKS or AK for the platform, as far as accuracy, life of the rifle, reliability???
piston AR better than standard for use with 7.62 X 39???

Get one of the versions that has the lower set up for AK magazines.

For a medium power .30 cal round, why 7.62x39 in an AR when the 300BLK is more versatile, cheaper to run and mags are standard AR mags? I have ammo in everything from 115 gr to 220 grain. I've owned 5 nice AK's, including 2 Valmets, and one sks which I despised...maybe there are some really good ones out there, but the one I had was good only for making noise and emptying brass...soured me in them. These days I'll stick with the AR platform. To me, the only advantage the AK has, is perhaps an underfolder stock. Of course, *your* uses determine what you need
I say "cheaper" because I reload everything...and cast a lot.

I haven't had an AR for over 15 years, so I know there are much improvements... I actually have an accurate SKS... it didn't start out that way, it was an early milled receiver $89.00 Chinese model... but with very little actual work, it now shoots MOA with pretty much all the cheapest ammo ( not a target rifle by any means... but easily hunting accurate ) also have a Czech VZ-58 ( AK clone ish )
as far as the 7.62 X 39... heck the cheap ammo is cheap, & the size or dimensions of the cartridge have lots of advantages... the 300 BLK is kind of a copy of the 7.62 X 39... but anyway I have 2 semi autos in that cartridge, & a bolt action ( CZ ) that I load for ( I actually like the steel cased ammo in a semi auto, because as a reloader I hate crawling on the ground picking up brass, the steel cases are super easy to clean up afterwards, using my magnet on a stick... I'm kind of trying to justify buying another AR... but it just doesn't do anything for me... I wasn't in the military, so I have no connection there though I collect mil-surp rifles... the wood stocked rifles just have more "soul" to me than the AR family... from a sporting purpose... I built an AR back 15 years ago, putting one of the 1st flat tops on my rifle, & setting it up for shooting prairie dogs... of course back then I think they all were 223's not 5.7 & all the new & recreated cartridges they are chambered for now... when I wanted a 6.8 SPC, I built a bolt action around the cartridge... My AR, with a match barrel, & a 20X scope, I pulled the flashider & replaced it with a compensator... the AR set up that way, made an incredible doggie gun... but I just didn't have the time to travel out of state, just to shoot P Doggies, & I ended up selling it long ago... if I still had it today, I might have put the handle back on it, & stuck it in the milsurp collection, even though it was a civilian version...
just seems that since I'm well stocked in 7.62 X 39, & hate throwing reloadable brass all over, that the 7.62 X 39 question was one I needed to ask about, if I were to buy another AR,,,

I have the lil CZ Carbine, & that is what I hand load 7.62 X 39 for... the semi's just get the steel cases

For semis I have a Ruger stainless/synthetic Mini30, SIG 556R and a PTR32.all are very accurate... The Mini30 was a train wreck accuracy wise when I bought it. Large groups and would walk right off a target with a scope mounted to the receiver. Put one of the Ultimac scout mounts on and while not a tack driver will run less than 2 moa and no more wondering groups. 100 yards sitting with a sling... 200 yards off the bench while adjusting sights... The 556R is a second generation gun when SIG got all the problems ironed out. 100% reliable and very accurate. It is just like this one... www.gunbroker.com/item/608315685PTR32 is also an excellent performer.

The CZ rifle is very nice - I have my eye on the one at my LGS. For a semi auto I would stick with an AK. Everyone should have at least one good quality AK...

Better choices for the x39 than the AR, unless you get one of the lowers designed for AK mags. But those are $. If you want a .30 cal AR, go .300blk.
If yer just wanting something to shoot x39, SKSs are a lot of fun & my Chinese SKS shoots as well as my Marlin .30-30 50yds with the standard iron sights. Thinking about putting a set of Tech Sights on it & seeing how well it shoots.

My first AR was a 7.62x39. The biggest issue, at least at the time, was magazines. If you loaded more than 6-7 rounds in a mag they would start to bind and the rifle wouldn't function. (AK mags are curved for a reason).
The other problem people run/ran into was hard primers. I saw it myself and saw it many times when I worked at the range (by then it was more the 5.45x39) , people would buy uppers in these calibers because of all the cheap surplus ammo. Only to get to the range to find the standard AR hammer/springs wouldn't set off the primers. The fix for that was more expensive domestic ammo, or heavier purpose made hammer springs which gave you a muh heavier trigger pull in the process.

CRAZY... I have an old "$89.00" machined Chinese SKS that I accurized... ( including Tech Sights ) that will make the cheaper spam can ammo go MOA... last time I had it out... got about a 2" - 10 shot group off the bench at 200 yards... also have one of the new made Czech CZ-58's that I've not shot much, as well as the bolt action carbine... just been thinking about an AR, since I expect prices should settle down now... ( since I don't have one in any caliber ) sold the 223 I built for Prairie Dogging years ago... if the 7.62's aren't bug free, maybe a 6.8 since I have a Contender Barrel & a custom Remington 700 in that caliber

You have to define the use niche. If a range/fantasy gun AR's rule. If it may come down to just YOU and a number of bad guys home/urban/vehicle, I'm choosing an AK 7.62x39. With the number of guns most of us here own, doubt you'll wear anything out. Unless your back to the range/fantasy gun. Reliability thru hard use and minial care, not debateable.

Choose a niche, assault, battle rifle or sniping. Hunting, range gun, game gun, zombie killing optional.
