500 S&W

Any love for the 500 S&W? I wonder how the long barrel gun would do for bench shooting steel? Not really interested in loading hot, just something for shooting out to 200 yard steel. I'm thinking 350-400 gr bullet up to 1400 fps(maybe only 1300 fps), should be somewhat pleasant to shoot because the gun is so big/heavy.

I have 2 encore barrels for the 500 S&W, one is 9" and the other one is 10.5". I have shot steel out to 300 yards with both using 350gr bullets and there was no doubt when I hit the steel.

Had one for a while, 8 3/8. They are fun, think their bark is worse than their bite, at least for the shooter. It was a lot of fun, ultimately, decided it was just too heavy a revolver. Found myself thinking a 500 JRH would make a lot more sense, either a BFR or a Ruger conversion..

I've got a 7 1/2 inch model 500, it's just fine for comfy shooting provided you're used to 44 mag type recoil impulse. I shoot 385gn powder coated lead at 1380 fps. It's a lot more bang than a 4"44 mag but a good bit less on the felt recoil. The couple times I've chronographed it from the bench were more punishing than standing of course; I cannot imagine wanting to shoot it from bench more than a couple times. Barrel length really will be up to you.

I had a performance center 500 hunter with a 7.5 inch barrel. For the size and weight it actually handled really well in the hand. However wanting the most powerful production revolver was short lived. I never shot it due to my precision center 500 JRH BFR getting most of my attention and I have other big bore revolvers that will fit my needs. But maybe I might get one again if I can get one for cheap.

I have a JohnRoss Performance Center model with a 5" barrel and no brake . It's great out to 200 yards with mild loads and 400 gr bullets. At about 1200 FPS it's not the recoil monster many make it out to be. It becomes a little toothy when you load it up though.

I have owned three of 500's. If I had found one of the John Ross specials, I may still have one. I do not care for the porting, and I never intended to shoot many full power loads. I never found much in the way of mid range loading data, seems like nearly everything is either a full bore magnum, or a trail boss load at 700 fps. I decided that my 44's were all I needed, and I enjoyed them considerably more.
Good luck with your 500, and I hope you can find some good loads. It's been a few years since I had my last one.

They are fun guns....
A friend bought one of the first 8 3/8" guns to hit the street and loaded it full up with 440 grain CP hardcast bullets. It would go completely through a propane tank, into the second and dent the backside... It was much more pleasant to shoot than the FA 6" .454 I had at the time.
I bought a 4" shortly after they came out and still have it. Shoot only 350 grain cast, plated and jacketed bullets. Target loads run 1050 fps and hunting defensive loads 1250 fps. Also bought a 6" with the three little drilled ports but even with the same ammo it was not pleasant to shoot. Sold it to a friend who uses it for black bear hunting in Pennsylvania.
Also found a 20" Encore barrel that is fun to shoot... If I ever got a chance at a cheap deal on a 7.5" PC gun I would buy it if funds were available...

I purchased an 8 3/8" 500 S&W w/brakes for jacketed & lead bullets back in 2010. Friends & myself have put over 500 rounds of hot 500gr. Hornady FP/XTP's through it. Really accurate handgun! As far as the gun hurting my hand, my Model 29 S&W & my .44 Magnum T/C Contender hurts my hand worse. The biggest problem with the 500 is the weight. My hand gives out after 10-15 rounds. Everyone that has fired it loves it! Fun to shoot & it destroys anything that it hits!

Owned a few when I lived in Alaska. The best 500 on the market. A S&W 500 with a 4 inch barrel was my constant companion while fishing.
