Fan of the forty one has a beauty of a Harton 5 shot for sale elsewhere and I see it has roasted birds eye maple grips.... now Ive always had an eye for maple and have seen birdseye and tiger maple listed as "roasted".... what exactly is roasted maple? Probably a dumb question but rest assured it wont be my last 😆

well Roasted maple is just that, maple that's been roasted in an oven. the reason it's done is it caramelizes the sugars in the pores of the wood which makes them more resistant to moisture. Guitar makers love to use it for that reason. it also enhances the figure of the wood which is a nice thing for stocks/grips/guitar necks.

I've posted shots of this before but.... The neck is roasted flame maple The body is roasted alder. Not for looks but for tone quality. And the front of the body is a koa overlay. The builder, Roger Sadowsky, uses roasted wood in the necks for stability. Before the roasted product appeared, he didn't feel like the stability of the highly figured woods was sufficient to insure long service life in his instruments. Once the roasted wood came on the scene, he began using it. I, for one, am really glad he did! Now back to our regularly scheduled gun discussions. Tim

I bought the maple off eBay from this guy, stores.ebay.com/hadesroastedmaple/He sells it for guitar necks, I was told the hades or 4A was better for grips. I bought about a dozen pieces when I bought, some he considered culls that have some nice sections that will make grips. Ronnie
