Hello
im new to the forum but have been lurking around reading some back articles. I've long wanted a 50 Alaskan rifle but have never had the patience to get one on order so I figured I'd ask here first.
I know about Brockman, nonneman, ssk and reeder. Is there anyone else out there that converts to 50 Alaskan? Has anyone had a browning 71 converted? I really like the style of the 71 and since its already chambered in 348 it should be possible to just do a reborn and chamber and adding a magazine tube reinforcement. Didn't know if anyone had tried that route.
Thanks

Looking at my 50 Alaskan and my Winchester 71 I think the barrel would be too thin for a rebore. But a rebarrel should be the easiest way.

Ben Forkin does them as well. Tim
Edit - Seems like Turnbull has done some in the past too.

Since this got brought up, what about a Thompson Encore single shot? Curious as it would be far cheaper for me than going with the lever action.

Harry McGowen does them too. Did a great job on my 450 Alaskan

Ben Forkin built a 50 Alaskan for me on a Ruger #1, my buffalo gun.

Check out Lee's article on the 50 Alaskan Siamese Mauser he built.
It inspired me to buy a couple SM actions, and I also bought a complete rifle to keep original.

The encore is an excellent option. You can get the katadihn barrel in 500 s&w and have it rechambered to 50 b&m alaskan.
I've read the article on the Siamese Mauser but just don't particularly like them. I'd much rather have a lever action. I have a 505 Gibbs bolt gun for big bolt work.
Harry Mcgowen, is that mcgowen barrels? I might have to give them a call.
I got one of the bighorn armory 500 s&w a little while ago because it appears to be very similar in performance to the 50 Alaskan, but have not had a chance to shoot it or chrono it.

Wild West Guns does one off Marlin action. I had one of their 50 conversions for a time--called it the ugly bang stick as it was cerecoated to look like a parkerized finish and had a pebbled Kevlar stock.

Well that's a nice looking rifle! Does the muzzle brake help significantly?

Well that's a nice looking rifle! Does the muzzle brake help significantly? Don't know!:-) I used that rifle in 45/70 with full power loads ,460 gr cast. No problems . Reeder insisted in laminate as using the factory wood and had spitting issues. I supplied the laminates and even then the glass bedded stock in laminate split!, with the brake! He pinned the stock with stainless pins and I have had no problem. It feeds flawlessly with cast performance 525 cast and a shooter to boot!

I have a 50AK built on a browning 71. I used a Pac-nor barrel, I don't think there us enough steel to rebore the factory barrel (if I read you question right).

Mar, my local go to gunsmith (Bob Harms) at the time when I lived in Salem Oregon. He is no longer doing much if any smithing.
