a while back I got a Lee 452-300-RF. I haven't shot any yet but it's a good looking boolit that i'm hoping will work well in my bisley with enough HS6 to get in the 1000-1100fps range. figured it would be a perfect everyday load that will handle everything I need it too without a lot of fuss.
the thing is it's a gas check boolit and I really don't want the added expense of gas checks for a load that doesn't really need them. I know sometimes gas check boolits shoot well without a gas check (something I intend to test in my bisley) but should the boolit shoot lousy I've thought about converting the mold to a plain base. either myself or by sending to someone like this guy. www.hollowpointmold.com/
then I got to thinking if I was going to have the gas check shank removed why not remove the lube grooves as well? if you are powder coating your boolits then you don't really need them and if using a Lee double cavity mold it would be a cheap way to get a grooveless boolit. should add some weight to it as well, though I don't know how much.
anyone try anything like this?

While I have not done that, Erik at Hollowpoint Mold is excellent and extremely knowledgeable. You won't regret using him if you decide to go this route.

At $35.00 for setup, and $5.00 per band plus shipping both ways, how much are you willing to spend on a $25.00 Lee mould? (assuming it's a double cavity)

(assuming it's a double cavity) well I really don't have much in the Lee mold as I got it in a group of Molds I bought here on the forum. so the only real cost to me would be would be whatever Erik would charge me for the job plus the shipping. if the total was around $60 then that's definitely cheaper than a custom grooveless mold.
if I decided to do it my self then it would only cost me a little time and whatever a reamer costs.
some people claim modifying the mold yourself without a mill or lathe can/will hurt accuracy but this guy removed the gas check shank of a lee 30cal mold with a drill bit and the results speak for themselves. castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?173556-Plain-base-a-180-gr-Lee-30-cal-mold

To the weight gain question. I've Penn 480 Ruger bullets here. The bullet that came in at 335grs lubed, sized went to 355grs when they offered it to me grooveless and PC'd. So, in this instance 20grs was picked up.

I have worked over a couple of Lee molds for .357 removed the gas check . Worked out pretty good , used a drill bit utility knife and a die grinder. I powder coat all my bullets and then run them through a sizer.

I have had Erik @ hollow point molds remove grease groves and gas check shanks on several molds and he does great work. Here is the latest one I had done. It came out great, now got to get some coated and loaded.
