I had to part with my constant companion of 17+ years just a few short weeks ago.
There is a huge hole in our home that can never be filled.

Congrats Tank ! 'Bout 6 yrs back our 12yr old big female Lab had a tumor burst in her too. Was T-Day with a house full of family from as far away as Va and SC.. We didn't get to bring her home. She got that last shot, laying in my arms, I closed her eyes. Aw'crap, gotta go.

I know its really easy to get attached to "man's best friend" & it can be a life changing event when you lose one. I had a pure white Boxer with one brown eye named Checker that a neighbor kid shot from his motorcycle that I'll probably never get over. Several years ago when I was still coaching football at the high school the head coach who had been my head coach many years earlier had a little Dachshund named Pretzel. I always called them "Weenie" dog but anyway Pretzel went anywhere & everywhere with Cleve, I think they even showered together. My old coach was as tough as they come, grumpy, always yelling, cussing, he was an old school, Woody Hayes type coach that would kick you in the butt & never let anyone have a drink of water during practice but he was tender with Pretzel. We would go fishing in my boat & Pretzel would eat all of my licorice & then get the "Rocky Mountain Quick Step" shi#s!! in my boat! Not good. One day Cleve came to practice & he walked up to me with big tears in his eyes & told me he had lost Pretzel during the night, he was absolutely devastated. It really touched me that this old guy, ex military, tough as nails actually had a soft spot, a part of him had died & he was a shaken man, I had to walk away for a minute. Great write up Tank, I've heard you talk many times about Ruger & I know he's a very big part of your close knit family, glad he's ok & good luck with the new assignment, looking forward to seeing you "unleash" your unique writing talent.

Just read the story Tank. Kind of hard to see the letters clearly on my keyboard right now. Dogs fill such a place in our hearts. I am so thankful that Ruger is doing well.

I really appreciate all the comments and well wishes guys. It means a lot and it was this support that gave me the confidence to submit stories to AH. I've been busy building a back log for the weekly column and haven't had a lot of time for posting here. I always check in from time to time and drop comments here and there as it is this site that keeps its finger on the pulse of what is going on in the real world of real shooters, hunters, handloaders, casters, and characters. Thanks for all the support fellas! It means a lot!

Mr Hoover..... that is a swell story and I didnt get to far into it before my eyes got a little wet. I was blessed to have been owned by two of the best pointing labs a mans ever hunted with. I dont know how many times the three of us would go into fields as other dogs and men came out with the saying of "no birds" and we would limit out in fifteen minutes with picture perfect tripod points. And how many times I was told "labs cant point" and I always replied with my limit of birds " Better let these two know it" πππ. A couple of years ago my male Rufus went blind... still has all the spunk of a young dog but my poor fella..... and January 8th this year my Belle died unexpectedly. Some men are wealthy, some men might be able to paint a perfect picture or win the super bowl or the Indy 500..... but I was allowed to bird hunt with two of the best gundogs a man ever followed thru the taΔΊl grass and shot over..... Yes Sir I was glad to read about your Ruger as he sounds like my kind of dog π
