Just curious if anyone here has put together a mid-frame flattop specifically for 45acp? Barrel choice? Am I correct that the top end loads are 23k safely? Thanks, Craig

I have a factory midframe Ruger with both cylinders. Ruger says 23,000 psi loads are fine.

I love those new midframe 45colt/45acp conv. I wanted the 4 5/8" SS model on GB I just seeing the blued 5.5". Most of all my rugers are blued except one, wouldn't mind another SS and a polished ss vaquero to add.
These frames(not the grip frame) are so similar to OM BH xr-3's and I've run them pretty hot, but it's like anything I'm sure they would handle 23K psi plus just not a steady diet. But one would not buy one if that was their intention anyway IMO they would just get a typical LG frame 45colt/45acp or FA m83 to go real big and have at it.

I had one of the 4 5/8 Flattop convertibles and shot mostly ACP through it. I only sold it because I also had a convertible New Vaquero and preferred the fixed sights. For what it's worth the New Vaquero and Flattop guns seem to be of higher quality than most Rugers I've had.

My Flattop 45 Colt/45ACP has a Bisley conversion, throat and trigger work and some other small mods that make it a dandy. My particular unit displays excellent tolerances and replaced my dual cylinder FA97 45. With ACP loads it is very pleasant to shoot. Gotta love it!!

I have to admit, that's sound logic. But the oversize cylinder on the mid-frame guns sure makes them a lot of fun, and certainly more interesting to me. My .480 is very pleasant to shoot with the loads I'm running and yet still very capable if I care to push it. I can't comment on the 5 shot 45 Colt because mine isn't done yet!

Hey I don't care I know I'm not going to blow one up, just reiterating what Ruger and some articles have said answering the OP's question. But that's all SAAMI crap it takes a lot more that 30 or 40psi to blow a LG frame so knowing rugers that 23psi is lawyer talk in reality I'm sure it's closer to 45-50psi, 480 is not designed as a high pressure round, and 5 shot, 45 colt when done, the builder usually lets you know based on what they did how safe it is to run whatever psi they say not everyone with a 5 shot runs it to low end 454 pressures but definetly more than 30psi ruger only loads. That's a large gap 30psi-50psi. My guess would be 40 psi on the sm frame and 50-55 psi on the large frame. I talking a "steady diet" here as well not a couple hundred rounds here or there. A lot of guys tell you I shot "XXX load super hot loads in mine" But they never seem to say how many rounds they actually have fired.

Thanks, Craig I had my Mid-Frame Flattop 45 acp cylinder converted to 460 Rowland. I do not shoot full bore Rowland loads in it but they are loaded hotter than standard 45 acp. Nice conversion in my opinion. I believe Clark Custom Guns did the work as I recall.

I just traded for a 5.5" stainless mid-frame .45 convertible yesterday. It needs to have both cylinders throated, and it has some transfer bar pinch that I need to correct. I think I'm going to buy the reamer and throat the cylinders myself. That way I'll be set if I run across another Ruger .45 with tight throats.

They work great!, I had a chance to buy 38-40 & 44mag ones with pilots cheap, now I need both & don't have them. Their expensive $140-$150 ish, Brownells only has like 3 calibers, call Manson directly and get them from him or check Ebay & GB first a that's how I got 2 of mine with pilots cheap guy used em once and sold them. I think there is a different brand one on Ebay now looks like it's a non pilot 45 didn't specify if LC or acp.

I have one with the 5 1/2 barrel, have only shot the 45 Special in mine. Had to have the cylinder reamed, way undersized. Shoots great!
