Tell me your opinions. I have an RIA that I converted to .460 Rowland and I like it that way. But my anniversary is approaching and I'm considering asking for a nice 1911 in .45 ACP for under a grand. I'll tell you what I've looked at so far.
That new Colt with the blue grips. I like the feel and parkerized finish, not keen on the thumb cut out on the grips or the blue fiber optic.
Springfield Range Officer. Really liked the feel and trigger. The rear sight is annoyingly massive and I would like front end serrations. Maybe the Loaded?
Sig Sauer Scorpion. Kinda ugly but felt nice in the hand. Plus,Sig quality. I hear the mags suck, but quality 1911 mags fall from the sky,so who cares.
Also, who makes reliable, long-lasting, quality 1911s in this price point in your opinion? I'm skeptical of Colt and Kimber due to some less than perfect past experiences with my brother's past 1911s. I'm real curious about Springfield, Sig, and Smith.
All opinions welcome!

The new production Colts are quite good. I picked up a Wiley Clapp Commander for $978 and have been very happy with it; they make a 5" steel frame Wiley Clapp gun as well. The 25lpi front-strap checkering and Novak sights make for a very nice setup.

Well, I was at my gunsmiths the other day & saw a Colt with the blue grips & blue fiber optic. Didn't like it either. Plus,,, it appears the rear sight assy needs work,, as it broke.
While you didn't mention it in your list,,, JM did,,, and I have a Ruger. I also have a pair of Kimbers & a pair of Springfields. One of my Kimbers,,, NIB had to have some major work. My Springfields,,, fine,, no issues. The Ruger,,, out of the box comparison of those 3,,, the best. Maybe look at Ruger as well?

The comment about the massive rear sight on the Range Officer leads me away from the 5 inch guns with target type sights. I like the DW and S&W 1911s. The Colts have vastly improved in recent years and are worthy of consideration. The Ruger looks good. I'll continue saying that at the under $1000 price the Springfield RO is my choice. Are they perfect? No... But they are recognized by good gunsmiths as having quality slides and frames. They are good base 1911s and will accommodate pretty much any modifications you like. Used? used is fine if you know what you are looking at.

And... Need to caution you about any 1911 under commander length and/or with a firing pin block... I've owned short 1911s that worked well but things get critical when you get shorter than 4. That firing pin block, grip safety or trigger driven, is bad juju in my old head...

I agree with Axe on firing pin safeties. If Ruger is willing to build them without that foolishness then so should other manufactures. Best Steel, Colt, Springfield. Best internals, Dan Wesson. Most manufactures make their pennies on cheap MIM disconectors, sears, hammers and safeties. My choice of 1911 under 1,000.00? Ruger.

I've never had a problem but I'm doing some more research.......

I believe I'd have to try a Ruger Lightweight Commander. Whatever was left over would go toward getting the slide blackened with something that wouldn't rub off.

I agree with Stan. I carry a DW Super 38 and a S&W titanium frame 45 both commander length. Lots of reasons why but they retail for a bit more than 1000 skins. Good money spent IMO.

Handled the Compact versions of the 9mm and 45 Springfield RO just yesterday. Nice guns. Bushingless barrels with an integral feed ramp barrel that you guys should be looking for in your alloy frame 1911s.

I'm a lightweight commander fan (have a 1952 Colt Commander). But, I'm a small guy with small hands. The commander just points/balances so much better than a 5" gun, IMO. Given newer 9mm ammo like the Federal HST loads, I might even be tempted to look at a 9mm 1911 that handled +P's.
Besides feeding and reliability set up's (see Axehandles comments above), see which one has the controls you want. Like the thumb safety-is it wide enough and provide a clear audible click when it's taken off safety? Does the mag release work well for your reach?
If the gun needs to be returned for service, who do you most trust to get it resolved right the first time.
A friend recently purchased a new Colt National Match for under $1.000

After shooting my Range Officer, it would be hard not to recommend one with the caveat that they need trigger work to be really nice. I like the ability to actually have the pistol hit where it looks, so no complaints about those massive adjustable sights here.
