I've started the powder coating process and have so far witnessed some improvements over traditional lubed bullets. Seems from a clean bore a few fouling shots was needed to make things settle in. So for 44 magnum loads what alloy are any of you blending for powder coating. I know one can get away with a little softer bullet plus the bake time will soften. What I have shot so far is loads for my 35 Remington and the 480 Super Blackhawk. For both of those the BHN was tested before coating and baking on my cabine tree tester at 13 BHN. With the 480 I was shooting 10 grains of Unique. The 35 Remington I pushed a little hard. I was getting good accuracy with the 35 but to be honest did not have the time to fully inspect the barrel after shooting. Quick glance looked okay. Just wondering if that's hard enough to launch the 44 magnum. I have the NOE version of the 432-640 and it is gas checked so this may very well be fine. Just looking for a little advice. Thanks!

gman I really cant be of any help on your question (Sorry) my bullets I cast from COWW's and water quench. After that I either wait awhile to PC (Most times a week or so) or PC the same day. I don't do this for any particular reason other than time or laziness... LOL How do you like that lead hardness tester? I have never used one so not sure where mine are at but, they work good for me and I guess straight COWW's are a good mix anyhow. I do have some pure lead I need to mix with COWW one of these days, I just need to figure out the mix method/percentages.. ? Thanks BigBore44

My first tester was the LBT but it got damaged. So far I can say I do like the cabine tree tester. I've had good luck with 50/50 alloy with maybe just 1-2% tin added. One thing about 50/50 is you can heat treat to make a pretty tough alloy that will not be brittle. BigBore I hope your doing better!

I do have some pure lead I need to mix with COWW one of these days, I just need to figure out the mix method/percentages.. ? Bigbore, Sixshot has a formula that he has posted here several times and his bullets surely do get the job done! Hope I'm not out of my lane here, but in my notes his formula is: For loads running 1000fps use 70% ww and 30% lead, for 1100fps use 80% ww and 20% lead, for 1200fps use 90% ww and 10% lead. Going down from 1000fps it is the same mix: 900fps = 60% ww and 40% lead, 800fps = 50/50 etc. You could use this as a starting point at least and tweak as necessary. Hope this helps Sir. Jeff
