I've been experimenting with low pressure 45 Colt loads. There is no shortage of data, but one has really stood out.
Have mostly used Unique and Universal for the last 30+ years. Recently, I wanted to try a few different powders.
Scanning the Hodgdon's site and CFE Pistol seemed to be a great choice.
They list 9.2 grs pushing a 250 grn cast at 1,014 fps producing 13,000 psi.
I tried the load in Starline brass and reached 1050 fps in my 7 1/2" guns. I suspect I am well under the 14,000 psi that's recommended for old guns. All of my guns are modern reproduction or stronger guns.
Feel this load is very safe in any gun. Will try it in the new Flattop Target Uberti soon. Should make a formidable woods load even in the Colt level guns.

I haven't tried .45 colt with CFE but I've had success with another large volume case. I've had great luck with CFE pistol loading .357 mag brass to .38 spl power levels. CFE also feels like it burns a bit cooler than both unique and the bullseye line of powders. 6.1 CFE in .357 starline brass capped off with cast 165 SWC @ 1.58" = 775 fps from 4" tubes. The empties fall out of the chambers 3/6 times on average.

Hows the accuracy with CFE? From a machine rest @25 yds, 5 shots all touching.

Hows the accuracy with CFE? From a machine rest @25 yds, 5 shots all touching. I've had similar accuracy. With hardened bullets about the same as Unique. With bullets that are cast a bit softer, accuracy is a bit better than Unique. This may confirm JSilva's observation that it burns a bit cooler.

Groo here Cfe data for 45acp is similar in that one load really cooks. It must have a lower psi "sweet spot"
