anyone have any loads for the 44 special using 240 grain plated bullets? using Unique or maybe 231?
was at Cabelas earlier and picked up a box of Berry's 240 grainers that were marked down. figured i'd use them to break in my new flat top while i'm waiting on some Keith bullets to show up.
I know Brian Pearce had an article earlier this year on plated bullets but the powders he lists for the 44spl loads are ones I don't have. he also strongly suggests not using cast bullet load data with plated bullets stating that it's possible to get bullets stuck in the barrel when shooting low pressure calibers.
should I just use Mid level jacketed bullet data? Mr. Pearce stated that plated bullets behave more closely to Jacked but that they are not identical. I got the feeling he placed them in between cast and jacketed.
thanks! Zane.

Zane, I love the plated bullets. Have found the flat nose bullets kill just as effectively as their cast counterparts.
7.5 grns Unique should do it and be safe in just about any gun.

Just keep velocity under 1200fps and they should work great. Plated is all I shoot in .45ACP anymore.

excellent! that's one of my favorite cast loads for the special. I think I even have the Dillon set up for it from the last time I loaded some up lol.
thank you Sir!

thanks!

I shoot a lot of the plated bullets in my USPSA competition guns. I use the 45 acp, & 40 S&W. I use Xtreme,,, and have used Raniers. The above advice is good. I run my 230 grn RN 45's at about 750 fps with 5.6 grns of Unique w/o any issues. MANY thousands fired. My 40's are a 180 grn, and are traveling about 935 fps, again using Unique,, and believe it or not,, 5.6 grns as well. The 7.5 grns of Unique in your 44 spl should be just fine.
