I was loading up some of the Miha hollow points yesterday. I loaded up five of them over 14 grains of HS-6. I was shooting my Ruger Super Blackhawk.
After I pulled the cases and examined them I noticed that at the end of each of the cases there was a little ring of lead. It was around the outside of the case mouth. I could take it off the end and it would be a complete ring. It was a much larger diameter than the bullet.
I am fairly certain it is not being caused by seating the bullets. I have the case flared enough I can solidly seat the base of the bullet in before putting it on the ram of the press.
Any ideas what this might be? All I can think is I must be doing something wrong when I crimp it.

Are you seating and crimping at the same time? If so you may be shaving that ring of lead off at the moment the crimp is applied but I can't explain why it would still be there after you shoot it. Is it possible that it's a ring of lube?

I've just gone and used the lower cannelure though I'm not looking for that last bit of oomph. Seems that folks think that ring is from the narrow band between the cannelures getting sheared off as the bullet gets pushed free of the brass which is crimped inward..
