I'm waiting on a new 44Spl Bisley Flattop to arrive, and wanted to have some loads ready to try once it arrives.
I cast a 265gr WFN for all my 44's and would like to give it a try in this one too. My question is;
Does anyone here have any Published/Book loads that use Universal Clays for my bullet style?
I have seen loads from 4.9gr Universal, to 6.5gr (Hot)..
Any & All input is Appreciated... I have No Thoughts of trying to push this Fine little Flattop to more than its designed for. I have plenty of bigger 44's and 454's for the wrist wrenching loads/needs This is gonna be used as it was designed for, a nice PPP that is a Joy to Shoot & Carry, and loaded so it's accurate it will deliver the goods just fine on anything in the lower 48 within reason... Should be a Great little gun and I also plan to use it for pot meat ... No Whizbang Mag loads for this one!
Thank you. Ray BB44
Any other powders/Loads that you folks have that are favorites?....
I have to look in my notes and see what the Skeeter/EK loads were...? iirc they used Unique and/or 2400..?

I mostly use 8.0gr of Power Pistol and my own 255gr cast in my 44SP Bisley Flattop. Very nice load, about 950fps. I have also used 6.5gr of Universal, about 850fps.

Ray,,, Brian pierce has a lot of loads for the 44 Spl. I think there is a link, on here somewhere. I don't shoot that heavy of a bullet with the SPL I use a 250-255 grain I have had good results with Unique. Yes I have the Elmer Keith load using 2400, you have a lot of options.

I did but I have not had a chance to look at my notes I have at home. Unique, 2400, and IMR-4227 are all classic powders that go with this bullet weight very well. But i will have to get to my notes before I speak more specifically...

Anyone think that 6.5-7.0gr Universal would be ok with this 265gr bullet? I am gonna try this and see. The bullet doesn't take up anymore room in the case than does the Lee 429-200-RF so, besides weight I think I should be OK. I just want to try it until I get another mold here.
Anyone else here using the Lee 429-200-RF mold/bullet?
I have some that I PC'd and they shoot pretty nice with 7.5 Unique... Do y'all think this would be an OK bullet for whitetail, or a little on the light side? It doesn't have a very wide nose/meplat, but I've seen less.
Thanks for any info. Ray

You will be perfectly safe up to 7.0 grains of Universal Clays with that bullet. Pressure will be fairly low, even at 7.0 grains. These cylinders can take 30k psi in the 44 special, not that I advise running that hot. I, too, shoot 255 grain Keith Bullets with 8 grains of Power Pistol as my standard working load. It is about the fastest 250 grain Keith load that is within SAAMI pressure limits that I'm aware of. The 265 LBT WFN is a good bullet, and low (standard) pressure data for Keith bullets can be used. I assume your shooting a pain base and not gas checked? What is your velocity goal?
When substituting standard pressure data for 250 keith bullets for the 265 WFN, I would be more concerned with starting loads being too week rather than max loads being too strong. Judicious use of a chronograph, and watching your pressure signs would be advised.

Singleaction Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try a few with this bullet and see how it goes. I don't own a chrony so will watch for any other pressure signs. I'm not one to push the envelope and load to Max, I always go for accuracy above all else. After all, if I can't hit my target, All the energy in the world doesn't do any good in the dirt/tree/air beyond the target I'm not trying to push my Flattop to high pressure's or turn it into a magnum by any means, I have plenty of bigger guns for more power if that's what I need. I just really like this bullet and until I get another mold for a lighter bullet I want to give it a try. I'd order ligher bullets, and/or a new mold for this gun but, I just can't afford either right now so I'm stuck using what I have on hand. Believe me if I could I would. I'd love to try some Keith types, Matt's wadcutters or whatever, but I just don't have the means at this time. Thank you to all who have helped me along the way. Your willingness to assist, answer questions and lend your knowledge freely is just So much appreciated!!! Ray BigBore44

I'm pretty new to loading for this caliber but I have been and am still testing loads for accuracy in my new FA 97. I've tried Unique, 2400, H110, Power Pistol, HS-6, Titegroup, Red Dot, Clays and Bullseye in varying charges. I have bullets from Matt's, Missouri, Penn, Montana and some on order still through Beartooth. My most accurate load, testing at 25 yards with sandbags and a 1x red dot is 4.0g Clays with a Mo. 180 RNFP. For all the Keith type bullets, 8.0g Power Pistol is easily the most accurate powder/charge weight. Im looking forward to testing more components before this fall arrives. Good luck, Chris
