I was conversing about my first custom with David Clements and he suggested Buckeye Burl for a set of grips. From what I can tell it's fantastic stuff. The gun will be blued on a all components, 4 four inch barrel with dovetail sight, and a Freedom Arms style round butt grip on a Bisley frame. If anyone has pictures of grips with such wood I'd be very grateful!

I've made lots of sets from Buckeye and it's a good choice, just make sure the wood is stabilized. naturally Buckeye is soft and i'm not sure how well it would hold up with lots of use.

To my eye it's an almost overly flashy wood and is toned down nicely with a satin finish rather than gloss. Also, choosing complimentary pieces of wood is very important. Just starting with book matched blanks doesn't guarantee the two grips will look better together than another two panels that aren't book matched. I think there's so much variation in color/heartwood/sapwood I'd want to see the blanks before hand so I knew it was what I wanted. All that having been said, Buckeye can look fantastic done right on the right gun.

Here's a picture of the slab, I'm thinking this could look really nice. The gun with will be all blued.
