Wow! Great pics! I'm just curious as to what handgun caliber would be the best if he charged... Plasma, something in the 40 watt range...

When I was a kid the family would go to Yellowstone a lot. We would always enter through the West Yellowstone gate. In the summer it gets crowded and I remember the cars lined up to go in and with a line of black bears just as long trying to get a snack. At night we would go to the dump and watch the grizzlies. There would be one or more cars parked shining their lights on the trash piles. The grizzlies would forage through the trash for something to eat. There would inevitably be some dummy out of the car trying to get a close picture and the bears would false charge if they got too close. One time that dummy was my dad - I'll never forget my fear watching that!
Then they rounded all the bears up and moved them and now bear sightings are a lot more rare. I was in Yellowstone a couple of years ago and saw one grizzly laying over a buffalo carcass with a couple of wolves circling around trying to steal a bite. Very interesting - problem was, you had to have a high power spotting scope to see it.
If I were to hike through Yellowstone, or anywhere else where bear encounters were possible, my primary defense would be bear spray backed up with a hot loaded 44 or greater DA.

Kraig, can you legally carry a handgun in Yellowstone, I didn't think you could. Sure would make it safer for those back backers though. I would much have have a handgun that pepper spray myself.

Haha, good one Whit Dick, it is legal to carry in the park, but not to shoot - figure that one out. You better believe that if my life was threatened by any critter, two-legged or otherwise, I would shoot and deal with the ramifications later.

You will have the rest of your life to live with the consequences of your actions, its just a question if that is a few minutes or many years...

Here's a link regarding firearms in Yellowstone. I knew that you you carry concealed (with some location restrictions) in Yellowstone if you had a concealed carry permit form MT, ID, WY (don't know if reciprocity with MT, ID, WY applies). Quote from link: Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park (such as visitor centers, government offices, etc.); those places are marked with signs at all public entrances. Hunting and discharge of firearms remain prohibited in Yellowstone National Park. Firearms should not be considered a wildlife protection strategy. Bear spray and other safety precautions are the proven methods for preventing bear and other wildlife interactions. www.nps.gov/yell/learn/management/lawsandpolicies.htmFWIW, Paul

Some would argue it would be better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.....just playing devil's advocate!

Hey Doc ? Got any shucks for a 40 watt Plasma blaster ? I'm seeing a wide open market for accessories and 'smithin' too ! Custom sights, and such. Do they come in a more CCW friendly 30watt version ? Who's gonna be the first to send theirs off to Harton ? So many questions ! At least we don't have to wring our paws over bullet choices.

I'm pretty sure your not going to round up a bunch of grizzlies and make them stay away from a food source. I'll bet they were shot and buried. Another "service" from NPS
