Yes, that's the way Elmer always suggested to carry a rifle on a horse, on the left side so it was easy to reach when you got off & with the scope up so they weight wasn't bouncing on the rifle scope. Many year ago I loaned a custom 270 to a friend & he mounted it on the right, rear of his horse & some time during the day he lost my rifle. They did eventually find it but he learned a hard lesson. Here's a photo of one of my grandson's, 12 yr. old Brock 3 years ago with a very nice Cinnamon phase bear taken with his 243, notice the custom Barranti rifle sling. Came in handy shooting prone. Dick That's a Great looking bear, Dick... I bet your grandson Brock was Almost as proud of that fine critter and hunt as his Grandpa was Excellent all the way around! Dick Can you elaborate on the custom 243 pictured. The 243 is a favorite of mine and is a nice easy shootin killing machine but, it seems that folks either love it or hate it. I am the former Thanks for sharing. Ray

Ray, my son Shane being a gunsmith has built so many custom guns I can't remember which one this is but I can say the 243 with "correct" bullets is a dandy hunting gun. We've never shot 100 gr. bullets in them because I've always thought that the 100 gr. slugs were a little too hard for medium big game. What we've done is dropped down one bullet weight & run the bullets a bit faster & it's always worked on muleys, antelope & bears with correct bullet placement. If you are shooting through heavy bone then that goes out the window. My son that built that rifle killed his first bear, a big 6 1/2 footer with a Sako 243 when he was 13 years old, one shot & it was quite a long shot. Now, the bullet we've used most of the time is the 85 gr. Sierra flat base. It's a pretty tough bullet & we've done very well with it. Brock has since killed another bear with that gun although I think he used a different bullet, maybe a 95 gr. Hornady, not sure. It was a beautiful blonde phase bear. I shot a lot of deer with that 85 gr. flat base Sierra back when I used rifles. On top of the mountain after climbing all day. This is on a spring bear hunt in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. I'm glassing for bears on the open slopes. Notice the XP100 under my arm, it's a 250 Savage, great bear medicine at long range. My camp is a long way below me! This was a fly in hunt. Dick

I've heard that the Linebaugh wouldn't fit in the M83, but I didn't have a good image in my head of just how big the rim is. At all. Here's a picture for anyone in the same boat.

mk70ss I think we need to plan a ride. Maybe northwest PA late summer to hear the Elk bugling!! Close enough for me and probably you as well. Bring your wife, I will see if my daughter can go to!! Oh boy, now were onto boots? Great, I'll have to line them up, lay a gun across the front of them, gunbelt draped over a pair.....cowboy hat over another...
