since they use the same bullets, why would they be hard to find?

I'm kind of a simpleton, but I don't see the need for the 50AE. I'm sure it's entertaining, but I don't see it doing anything that the JRH can't do better.

50AE Thoughts.... It is nice to be able to pick up off the shelf ammo. Note that when you reload for the 50AE your bullet weight is limited by the taper crimp. Go heavy and bullets will jump crimp.

Is similar to having a 45 acp cylinder for a 45 Colt or 9mm for a 357 Magnum. Obviously the rimmed rounds are better, but versatility rules.
For me, it included having 750 rd of 50 AE brass given to me. Once Fired brass us usually cheap or free.
Also, I find the shorter case stabilizes reduced loads better.
Largely, it's an individual's decision. I always opt for versatility, as we never know what the future holds.

Well I was sadly too late on getting the spare cylinder before it shipped. Dammit. Oh well, I can I always ship it back if I could want it.
The good news I should have it by Tuesday. STAY TUNED FOR PICS!

I don't suspect you'll be disappointed with your new BFR!

So my BFR arrived yesterday at my FFL... And it had the wrong barrel length. After calling MRI, my FFL found out his distributor used an old SKU for a 7.5" barrel that they used to offer. They also responded in stellar fashion by sending a shipping tag and having my FFL ship it directly to them so they can re-barrel it with the now standard 5.5" that I had wanted. Whole on the phone, they asked, "Isn't this the guy that wanted a .50 AE Cylinder? We can fit one while it's here if he wants us to". Lucky day! So, yes, I'm having the add that .50 AE cylinder for sh*ts and giggles. And I even paid direct (no tax). So I saved the shipping and roughly $28 in tax. Hopefully I have it back next week.

Ah rats, I read the first half of the post and thought "oh good, my BFR really needs a 7.5" barrel, not the 5.5, I'll tongue-in-cheek tell him I'll trade him" Then I read the second half. drat! Not that I think you will regret having the 5.5, but the recoil is pretty peppy, I think a 7.5" barrel would go a very long way toward taming it more.

I think the 50ae cylinder is a great idea for the "sometimes reloader". The guy who reloads one or two cartridges, couple hundred rounds a year. Has to drag himself up and out to put together some ammo. But when has an itching to shoot a 50 cal, can go to the local shop and buy some 50AE and off he goes. I imagine most of us are not in that category.

If a person already has 500 JRH brass, the AE cylinder is pointless. Been there and done that.
