Hi Folks I heard somewhere that the early SRH 480's had issues, like hard extraction, and accuracy issues. Is this a fact or internet mumbo jumbo???
I have a Target Grey 7.5" 454 SRH. Anything I should be aware of with this or any future buys?
If it was true, is there a certain Ser# or production date etc. to watch out for?
Thank you BigBore44

I can't answer all your questions, maybe Whit will chime in. I can address a couple.
I came by a target gray 454 SRH some time back. It had an action job and magnaporting. Foolishly, I sold it to a good friend. I already had one of the new stainless guns.
The gun shot lights out and was excellent in every way. In regret, I tried to buy it back. He wouldn't budge and claims it will be buried with him.
I believe you have a gun worth hanging on to.

My Dad's got a pretty early SRH in 44, no problem running hot loads through it. I believe the early 480s that had extraction problems were related to chamber dimensions being a little off, they seem to have fixed that in recent years. Whitworth will likey know the answer to this question. Here's a reference on timeline for the switch from 6 to 5 shot cylinders. These 5 shot guns are supposedly very rare, if you find one snatch it up! www.gunblast.com/Ruger-480Alaskan.htm

I have early examples of all SRH's a 44,454 and 480. The only one that has problems is the 480 and that is the extraction issues. Nothing horrible, unless your handloading. It then makes you question pressure. I can guarantee none of them have any other isuues and definitely none in the accuracy dept.

I had one of the early .480's. Accuracy was fine, but extraction was very difficult, even with factory ammo.

I know some here don't care for the loks of the SRH, and that's fine with me. I don't mind the look of them, but they sure do fit/feel Right in my hands. I haven't shot the 454 much yet but I'm gearing up to do just that. I just got a box of the Penn 270gr ThunderHead's. Now I just need to come up with some 45 Colt brass and find the load(s) it likes. The 9.5" 44 I've had about 1 year and it's a shooter for sure. I have a nice easy shootin load of iirc, 8.5gr Universal under a 265gr WFNPB I cast of WW. Also have some of these PC'd and loaded with approx 21/22gr H110 (need to check my notes). I really want to try a heavier bullet in the 300- 330gr'ish area. This gun I'd like to have cut down to something about the Toklat.(4.75" area) for easier packin. Next up is the 480, I don't have it YET, but probably one day I will . I kinda wish I'd have gotten this instead of the 44 SRH, but I'll probably have all three by the time I'm done I'm gonna go with the Bisley 480 next though. I think I have my 6" GP100 sold so I'm getting closer. Now I need to sell off a like new 15" TC Encore bbl in 375 JDJ. That will get me closer to the Bisley 480, Yaahooo!!! HAHAHAAA Thanks for the info and keep it coming BigBore44

I just got my 480 SRH back yesterday. Same shipment as the 454 SBH.
It got the same treatment. Barrel gap at .0015", action job, 11° crown and throat work.
Like you, I don't mind the SRH. In fact, I love them. My new 454 was so good from Ruger, it gets no work.

I have one of the early 480 SRH's and only on a rare occasion has it had any extraction issues. If it starts,,, a little honing might be in order.

I believe all the Super Redhawks to be great guns. But, I rarely shoot full power loads. One thing I've learned from my decades with the 45 Colt is its usually not necessary.

Been holding a set for quite a few years. Hogue grips, Bowen sights, and aftermarket springs are the only updates. Don't shoot them a lot but I've loaned then out with no complaints.

Nice Trio Axe You say those front sight's are from Bowen? Did they need any trimming or just installed and shot? Man I love the Target Grey finish!!! Thanks BigBore44

The only one that has problems is the 480 and that is the extraction issues. Nothing horrible, unless your handloading. It then makes you question pressure. Perhaps this is explained by most factory ammo (e.g. Hornady 325gr XTP) running well below SAAMI pressure.

There were several phone conversation with the folks at Hodgdon. Ended with me speaking to the engineer in charge of the project.
