Update: Finally got around to posting some pictures of the new 480 and my order of bullets came in from Missouri Bullet Co., I got some of their regular cast and also coated to compared performance. Luckily these new ones are measuring at .476-.4765 so that is quite a bump from the Penn I previously tried, some of those were under .475 and definitely sized for a Freedom Arms! I've had good results using cast sized to groove with high enough pressures in the past, before I try to source a .477 bullet I'll give these a shot since they are reasonably priced projectiles for plinking.
The obligatory glamour shot, aside from the grip frame being a bit oversized for the grips it's a pretty well finished gun. I tried several different Bisley grips from other guns in my safe and only one pair fit decently well but those are darn near perfect on their host gun so these will stay on the 480 for now. All in all I'm very happy for the price paid for this Ruger. I'll probably take a bit of material off the grip frame and reshape the grips for a flush fit at some point, I just need the time and a bit of courage to grind away at a new gun.
Don't judge the front sight just yet, it was made from scrap and isn't even blued. I was testing different heights and started with this one at .390 I believe. The finish is just a few coats of liquid sharpie for now and it actually works about as well as the factory FA partridge I have on a different gun. If this height works with whatever light and heavy bullets I settle on using I'll make a proper replacement and finish it accordingly. I'm waiting on another rear blade from BCA so that will also factor into the mix. On the front sight I took an idea from sixshot and thinned down the sight width just a hair on each side, you can really tell the difference in small changes of grip and sight alignment now. I think I'll keep this width on the final version.
Typical grip fit everyone is reporting, I'm not concerned. Just an excuse to buy a power sander!
Symmetrical on the other side.
Typical 25yd target during the sight in, I had lots of groups with 2 or 3 almost touching and the rest sideways on the other side of the target. Sad performance but still fun on the next target below.
Nice little steel plate at around 30 paces, I think this was a 12" plate IIRC. No problem hitting 5/5 from this distance but I'm sure about half impacted sideways. There was a ton of wind that day so someone's target flew in from the next bay over while I took the picture, top right on the berm. Kind of funny.
