Been working with the 395 gr 475 miha HP bullet and I am deforming it seating it into the cases. I am using Rcbs dies but the seating stem doesn't perfectly match the nose profile of my bullet. I am using a fairly soft 70/30 ww-pb mix and this didn't happen with ww bullets or when the bullets were lubed and not powder coated. I seated some using my 500 mag die which is flat and only touches the bullet tip. It flattens it a little more but looks OK and shouldn't affect the HP. Should I get a matching profile seating stem or a flat one?

I use RCBS dies for my 480. I had the same problem, I filled the seating stem with epoxy. After it dried, I sanded it flat. The problem went away after that. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but it's held up for almost 2 years.

Did you use something like JB Weld, Steve? I have a couple seating dies I'd like to treat in a similar fashion.
My MiHec hp's were powdercoated and don't deform in my Hornady 480 seating die. I have the 4-piece set.

That's a great idea filling the cavity and filing flat, thanks. I think my dad's dies are hornady will also check that out.

I was gifted a set of 480 dies, lee. The seating ste is rounded and deforms the HP. It kind of messes up the solid. The seating stem on the lee is such that I am just going to make a whole new and make it flat. You guys be aware that the hot glue/JB weld or what ever you want to use to form to fit your nose profile, make sure the bullet is square in the case. Buddy did the same thing and got issues because the bullet wasn't seated square to begin with in the case. Rolled a seated round across the table and they had a large amount of wobble. He used hot glue gun. A cocentricity gauge would not be out of line to make sure you were on track or square. Jeff

I have the Hornady 4 die set as well & it works fine but I'm sure JB Weld would cure your problem. I would score the inside a bit first before applying the JB so it will grip the seating stem.

On my Lee dies for the 480 and 500 I pulled the seating plug and spun it in a drill and used a file to make the plug almost flat. On my RCBS 475 and Hornady 500 Linebaugh I used the JB weld. DO NOT use JB Quick. That stuff is crap and will break apart, turn to powder and fall out with use.

I was having that problem loading for my .45 Colt...I took a fully jacketed, 300 grain XTP mag, put some putty (the stuff that you use to hang posters on the wall with) in the tip and pressed it up in there. After seating a few, it was good to go. I'm reading that there are better solutions on here, but it worked in a pinch, and it's not permanent.

Im having a slight issue with my RCBS .480 dies. Its a new boolit im casting (NOE 480-375 WFN) and brand new Speer brass that ive had on hand for a while now. Im hoping its just the brass being new, as crazy as that sounds. When i seat a boolit (sized at .4765") a small amount of lead seems to get shaved off the as the boolit goes into the case and kinda ends up at the crimp grove. Ive tried flaring the case mouth a little more but the seating die closes it up as the case enters the die. Haha, whats odd is this doesnt happen with my bigger 428gr boolit and my Starline cases. Any suggestions? Ive never been big fan of RCBS dies. I may break down and buy the Hornady set.

leftysixgun: I suggest you purchase just the Hornady seating die as I suspect your lead shaving is due to misalignment in the seating process. I have used both the Hornady and RCBS sets for my 480 & 475. The carbide sizing dies seem equivalent. I don't care for the Hornady expanders as they are not readily disassembled (I like to adjust the size of my expanders to match the cast bullet size). The Hornady seating die is a significant improvement over the old RCBS design. My Hornady set came with a 4th die for crimping but I found the dimensions too tight for my 0.476 and 0.477in diameter cast bullets. I prefer to use my RCBS seating die just for the roll crimp. Bill Idaho Im having a slight issue with my RCBS .480 dies. Its a new boolit im casting (NOE 480-375 WFN) and brand new Speer brass that ive had on hand for a while now.
