Powder coated my first bullets yesterday, the 475 Miha 395gr Hp to use in my SB Bisley 480 and shot one into water bottles today. At 15 yds, went through 6-2 liter bottles, shed noses in first 2 bottles. The large wadcutted like piece that went through weights 222 gr. These are chronying at 1100 fps and are a mix of 70/30 ww/pure lead I cast myself. Do you think the water is a harder expansion medium than flesh? I worry they will act like this in a deer instead of mushrooming and staying together. Does the Pc coating have anything to do with how the bullet mushrooms compared to a non pc bullet? Thanks.

My test with gallon water jugs was similar. I've heard water is harder on bullets than flesh. I shot 2 Mihec hp's into rows of 7 jugs. The hp fragmented off in the first 2 jugs as well, leaving the remaining wc at 200 grains.
My new Caldwell chronograph decided to not work, so I have no velocities except for a previous trip which showed 1008 fps with 13 grains Blue Dot. 14 and 15 grains are more stout but I'd just be guessing on the velocity.
I can't comment on differences between powder coat and lubed bullets, except to imagine that - if anything - the pc bullets would be more ductile having spent 10 minutes in a 400 degree oven (unless they were then water dropped).

This was loaded with 13 gr of HS6 and runs at 1100 fps, might have to shoot a non pc bullet to see if it behaves differetly in the jugs. Will try to post pics of the recovered PC bullet I shot.

That's very similar to how my bullets ended up.

The good news is a .475 wadcutter makes a helluva hole! I recommend getting velocity closer tp 1000fps of leave out the pure and go all ww.

Water is a very hard test medium on bullets but is repeatable. Wet newspaper is better, pack it in a water softener bag & soak overnight, you can even add some saw dust to the mix. Pack it tight & use plenty, then back it up with a water jug or pine board.

If he's running 13.0gr hs6 then I bet he's really close to 1000fps. I run 13.5gr in my 4 3/4" Freedom Arms and get 1050fps, the barrels shorter but it promise it's tighter then a Ruger and I bet we get really close to the same speeds.

I chonyed these and they are 1100 fps in my bisley, they were 1140 fps out of my longer bbl BFR.

I wish I could get a shot at a deer at 15 yards!
Or a pig or an elk or a bear or.....
Zeus's results are the real deal.

Water is HARD on a bullet. Like slightly malleable concrete BUT, what you are seeing is exactly what we want. You are shedding the nose and the remaining portion is traveling straight as we wanted and still weighs almost as much as a normal 44 mag bullet but is .476! I think you will be fine. My rounds at 1100-1160 have hammered everything I've pointed them at.

Years ago (may years, ack!) I recall an article in a gun mag, maybe it was Mas Ayoob, saying if your hp's frag in water then you'll probably get good expansion if you have to use the round in a defensive situation. I imagine this 385 hp would certainly make for a devstating anti-personnel round up close like that, and a perfect game load at reasonable distances. The distance for me is related to my accuaracy off-hand. Right now that stands at about 50-60 yards. There have only been a couple times that I've seen an animal that close when out hunting (10-15 yards). Dick and Zeuss have actually shot game animals with this bullet, and I readily accept and rely on their field tests of this bullet over any speculation I might have on the subject, especially when derived from shooting water jugs. Oh, and my shots were from about 10 feet, not yards, and I went home soaking wet from the experience.

Thanks for all the replys, mainly wanted to make sure the bullet would expand, would have been worried if it didn't open up. I have shot wet newspapers in the past but didn't have any now. Thanks.

There won't be any problems with expansion and that alloy. I use 50% WW / 50% Pb.... sometimes I air cool them when impact velocity is under 1050 fps and sometimes water drop them when above that or using high pressure rounds. The nose is designed to come off like that.... I have tested them since our states handgun deer season opened in '91. They start opening just inside the chest wall and peel the nose off to the bottom of the hollow point while inside the chest cavity and leave the opposite side like most people want. Close to a hundred deer have been killed with them in my testing. Some DRT and some with a 40 yard run with the lighter 35 caliber handguns. Enjoy the design, that's what it's meant for, to kill deer and somewhat lighter and heavier things.
