Joe S.... beautiful Super Blackhawk. Should it look as antiqued after cleaning as it appears in your photo, and providing the bore is good and shoots straight, you might as well leave it be. I would. And have it as a shooter. Which all my guns are. David Bradshaw

Wish it could talk ! Wonder if well cared for, and often carried, or rode hard and put away wet 2-3 times. Good save. Rescueing Rugers much more noble than rescueing..I'm not going there.

I don't know what it looked like when you started but outside of the aluminum erh that thing looks like it has been in a fire. That's the only thing I have seen completely destroy the finish on the whole gun.

It looked like that. But the gun is not pitted except in one spot and all springs are good. Under the rust that was under the grips still had good bluing and the old pachmyers were not melted or anything. I guess its possible it was rebuilt but also possible someone spilled vinegar on it...

...that thing looks like it has been in a fire.... +1 I've seen a couple of Blackhawks that looked similar and the culprit was indeed fire. Considering what heat - and the subsequent firehose quenching - can do to heat treated metal, I kept my wallet in my pocket. Like the one pictured, the grips looked completely fine on both guns. No discoloration or blemishes whatsoever. I'd be curious to know what happened to yours, Joe.

Fire evidence shows up in various ways. Heat exposure could be minor, but with water destroy the finish. Small springs may lose their temper, while the mainspring remains strong, or barely weaker. Plastic sight inserts or parts of course collapse fast. If all the small springs are sound, check carefully for signs of replacement. Any hint means the cylinder should be Rockwelled.
I remember a 94 Winchester which had been through a house fire. Someone had carved a buttock and for end for it. The carbine was brought to my friend Ed Verge with a request to replace the springs, all of which were dead as nail metal. The barrel had a bit of rotary warping, as though the rifling may have influenced the warp. Verge had been a fireman earlier in life, but didn't need that experience to know the carbine must not be fired.
A close look at the bore may help. David Bradshaw

The rifling looks good to me. Nice and shiny just looking down the bore. I dont have a bore scope.
