They are going to take a look at the bore of my new 454. They claim that it is normal, but want to take a look anyway. Has anyone else noticed what appears to be HEAVY tool marks through the entire length of the bore? You can only see it with a strong side light. I don't know if it is tool marks or not, but to me, it doesn't look good. The entire bore looks like this - 360 degrees for the entire length.

My .480 sure doesn't look like that.

I think you are wise to send it back. It diffinently should not look that. It will be interesting to hear Ruger's answer. One thing for sure, it will be rebarreled. Keep us posted.

One thing about Ruger, they will make it right.
Mine didn't look like that either, so can't believe that's normal. Wise move to return for correction.

Looks like the rifling was hammered over a chunk of granite, as opposed to a carbide button. But the problem may be in drilling the roundstock. Hammer forging cannot be relied on to cure a poorly drilled hole. I line up with those who opt for a new barrel. David Bradshaw

Had I seen that when I picked it up I would have passed. I have no doubt they will replace it, and I don't have any problem with having to send it back.
I will politely ask for them to set the barrel gap at 0.002"-0.003" with no thread choke and to replace the ill fitting grips while they have it. Who knows...maybe they'll even do it!

Just got the call from Ruger - they have opted to replace the whole gun. Kinda surprised me - figured they would want to replace the barrel only.

I've got a mid 80"s 45 Colt Bisley that has this same look in the first couple of inched from muzzle toward forcing cone. Maybe not as bad but I did run some fire lapping rounds through it. Shoots pretty good but it may do even better with a new barrel. Never saw this in another Ruger till your picture.

Makes one wonder what else was wrong that they opted to replace the whole gun. Hope the new one is exceptional.

Makes one wonder what else was wrong that they opted to replace the whole gun. Not necessarily anything else wrong. Often it's easier/faster/more efficient/cost effective to pull a new gun out of inventory and get it immediately back into the hands of the customer, rather than make the customer wait while you do repairs. I've had similar from high end optics manufacturers: sometimes item is even returned with a repair ticket stating XY&Z was done, but turn-around time was instant and the returned s/n different; fully reconditioned item just like brand new...

They told me it would have to be built, so it apparently isn't coming out of inventory. She said 1-3 weeks. If I get an email stating it is shipping in the next day or two, then I would say it came out of inventory.

Thats probably the worst "new" barrel I've ever seen.
