So over the years I’ve tried a bunch of Redhawk grips on my 4” RH. The original Hogues that came on it. They were to wide and I didn’t like where the finger gooves put my fingers. ![](http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w505/pbsnyd/Redhawk/RH_45Colt.jpg) Then I tried the Ruger original wood ones. Seen here in Simply Rugged Pancake worn crossdraw. They were "ok" but if my grip wasn’t just so I’d get smacked pretty good at the base of my thumb. ![](http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w505/pbsnyd/Redhawk/srHol_01.jpg) I then tried some Pachmeyer “Grippers” with the grooves. They were too deep from backstrap to the finger grooves and generall pretty big overall. Here's what they look like. this is Whits old 454 RH. ![](http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f196/MarkoR/P1000577.jpg) I then bought some pretty, stippled Nels Griffe grips. These were much better and sure were pretty. In fact these grips got the 454 Redhawk a place in Whit’s BigBore Book! ![](http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w505/pbsnyd/Redhawk/rh454_01.jpg) Well, I still wasn’t totally satisfied and this RH is my go to woods packing, berry patch, fishing, backup gun, bear gun. It’s a tool…form follows function kind of a gun so I sanded em down and rounded of the sharp edges that poked me in the side and I was happy. Until every range session with “rocks and dynamite” loads as Mr. Bradshaw calls them ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) My thumb joint would suffer. ![](http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w505/pbsnyd/Redhawk/file_zpsc9faaadb.jpg) This summer I finally tried the $13.75 Uncle Mikes/Butler Creek rubber grips that Numrich still sells. Man, what a difference. For me they are perfect. Not too big, finger grooves seem natural, the little bit of covering on the backstrap makes all the difference on my thumb. I can shoot as many “rocks and dynamite” loads as I want and the hand feels fine. ![](http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w505/pbsnyd/Redhawk/PA070127_zpstrwbiwn0.jpg) If you have a Redhawk and have been going through the grips looking for the right ones, try these. Still a deal at twice the price. www.gunpartscorp.com/ad/1287770.htm

Those Butler Creek grips were always the best fit for me as well!

And of course all mine are long barreled so recoil is a bit different. The stock grips seem pretty universally unpopular but I actually like them.

Fired many rounds from from first Redhawk 7-1/2" configuration with wood grips without pain. Thus, upon its arrival, stoked. the 5-1/2" Redhawk full house. OUCH! Quickly switched to Pachmayr rubber on the 5-1/5". Huge boost in the knock on the base of my thumb. I've carved on the Pachmayr Presentation (fat fat fat), and Gripper (long, skinny, with wide grooves which spread fingers for disastrous vertical stringing). Reckon it's time to follow Snyd's lead and the experience of Otony for a stab at old Uncle Mike. David Bradshaw

I have tried to explain to others before how that they do not fit everyone's hands and can cause problems instead of helping with ones shooting.

Just to expand on this a bit, I too tried the Pachmayr Presentation and Grippers styles, and found both lacking.. Perhaps it is merely a consequence of a left handed Wednesday and the stars aligning, but the Uncle Mikes grips were, in the immortal words of Goldilocks, "just right".

Snyd,
Thanks for the info. Read your thread and ordered 2 sets and they showed up yesterday. I have the presentations on all mine(4.5, 5.5, 7.5). They are fat but they work ok for me. In other words I was not thrilled with em but they handle recoil well and I shoot well with them. I put one of the latest sets on my 5.5. They feel great. Definately narrower and the finger grooves fit me well and it keeps your hand up at the same hieght of the presentations which helps to reach the hammer with the thumb and keeps the bore alignment low. I will take em to the range and see how they shoot. So lets see I now have 8 spare sets of redhawk grips. Yep I' ve tried a few!

I HATE presentation grips on everything I have ever tried them on. And as much as I hate to admit it I ordered a set of Uncle Mikes. I feel so ashamed. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png)

...and that was THE reason I sold my 5.5" .41 Redhawk...could not find a set of grips other than the stock original wood that felt good.
The wood grips were fine with "normal" 210 grain Magnum loads, but put 250s in the gun and it became unpleasant to shoot. When I sold the gun I think 4 sets of grips went with it...wanted the new owner to have a choice... Not sure if the Uncle Mike's were available at the time but when this new 4" gets here if the Hogues don't fit that will be the next try...
Thanks for the tip...Bob

Guess I need to dig up the video of my 13year old daughter shooting my 500L Redhawk with stag grips, full power loads and no gloves! My wife posted it on facebook a few months ago. ![](http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m303/zx11timm/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsa6734c11.jpg)
